I'm the other guy. I live in the Ozarks and there are places where the hills are ridiculous enough that instead of up/downshifting every 10 seconds on a hill, I'd rather just keep it in 4th or so; I tend to believe that for those occasions revving a bit more than usual is better than 2 upshifts/downshifts every 10 seconds.

As we've learned from the 3.5EB, a TT V6 will get good fuel economy unloaded but under load it's no better than any other engine and can actually be worse than some OHV engines. I'd actually be interested to see an OHV version of the 5.7, though I'm sure it will never happen.

I get that everyone is anxious to know what the new Tundra will look like, but these articles that have hypothetical renderings are silly. It's like that previous rendering of the red Tundra with the Highlander front end. I still come across people claiming "this is what the new Tundra looks like!" People assume it's all real.

Transmission Techs have told me the constant shifting up and down on a Torque Converter that doesn't have a chance to lock, is a great way to create "fluid-frying" heat. I've owned 2 Cummins powered trucks with Automatic Transmissions, so I've talked to quite a few Techs! Choosing a proper gear for speed, load and road conditions, is a foreign concept for the "do it for me" mentality of today though.:D

Why do you want to go backwards in design? OHV cam in block has limitations that OHC do not. Packaging isn't an issue here with the size of the engine bay and head flow would be hurt by going to an OHV design without a complex rocker arm arrangement to maintain the 4 valve per cylinder design that allows for good flow.

The interior shot looks directly out of the 2020 Highlander, look at the dash shape and cubbyholes below the radio and passenger airbag. In fact once you goto their page, it is a photo from a Highlander, just to illustrate the speculated headunit design they think would be used.

This is the frustrating thing for me about the 6 speed we have. I swear the only time the TC is locked is in 6th gear cruising.

I've only had my truck for 4 months now, but I'd trade up for the manual if it was ever available. It'd probably be a lot smarter financially to get the OVTune...

I thought the TC could only lock in 4th gear and below, which is why they recommend towing in S4.

You do know the the lockup torque converter wasn't a common thing till the early/mid 1980's right? The problem is insufficient cooling of the transmission fluid usually. Lockup helps with fuel economy removing the slippage between the impeller and turbine. Lockup can occur in 4th through 6th gear in the AB60E/F transmissions used behind the 3UR-FE (5.7l)

Yes Sir. Just like Transmission Techs have told me, "slipping causes heat, heat burns fluid" Choosing the proper gear to prevent constant unlocked TC helps keep the fluid stay cooler. My Cummins trucks were '93 and '99 Dodges.

Damn, go really excited about a manual...I'd buy that in a second, as long as the exterior didn't look like that.

Well if dodge would have used an ALLISON instead of there Chrysler pos that would have not ever been an issue .

Speed differential between the impeller and turbine causes heat, this is why an automatic will downshift to help reduce the differential. Automatics were used for towing long before a lockup converter was used. The more torque being transmitted across the fluid coupling (torque converter) the greater the slip. The lockup clutch material in a torque converter is actually really small and is only suitable for low load situations like cruising at speed when there is a low torque requirement. Towing heavy weights or uphill travel will almost always unlock the torque converter and this is why proper cooling is essential.

Chrysler transmissions are indeed trash after the three speed era. Automatics behind Cummins engines were notorious for being underbuilt just like automatics in the Caravan and Grand Caravan especially when paired with their larger V6 engines.

Not going to tell you not to. Just wanted to clarify for you what torque converter lockup is for and what it won't do.

happy with my 2020 if this is anywhere near the styling they're going with.

And I wonder how jam-packed they'll make it on tech, gadgets, wizardry, sorcery, etc.

I hear you won't have to start the truck, it'll 'know' who you are. It'll steer for you, change lanes, back-up and launch the boat. Owner's Manual, Hazard Flashers, Park Brake and Sequential Shifter; all deleted!
