For all you rural peoples like me in the South East Us. What kind of internet service do you have?

I have an ATT router which is kinda crummy. I'm looking to upgrade.

DSL is not offered in my area.
Nor is anything reliable other than satellite. I am trying to stay away from that if possible.

My Dad has an IP that uses a radio signal. He currently gets about 25Mbps and he's anxiously waiting for their upcoming 100Mbps

We got kinda lucky. We've got Windstream; and we had a whopping 3Mbps down/1Mbps up, up till about 3.5 years ago.

Then, as a result of the telecommunications funding bill that was put out near the end of the Obama administration, they ran fiber right down the highway, about .4 miles from where I live.

So we literally went from 3Mbps to 65Mbps down/20Mbps up overnight. :D Bonus - my dad retired from AT&T, so as a result I've figured out over time how to 'help' them troubleshoot. As a result, almost anytime I call in an issue, I get someone responding probably within 1/2 day at most. (I've helped them fix issues that even their own tech support was stumped by.)

How does that work? That sounds nifty!

you sound like me. Except at a factory pops and I both work at.

I had fiber when I lived in town. It was sweet.
I live in the boonies again. The nearest fiber line for us is 15 miles away. Other words not an option.

If the wind is blowing correctly, your toes are pointed eastward, and your tongue pointed westward we can get up to 2mbs down.

I move half way back to town because of this. Regular People and your job don't understand that if you live in the country and not near an interstate or highway that even today I had zero cell service and real limited Satellite internet. Where I live now I have one choice for wired internet and one bar with Verizon, still had zero bars with AT&T cell phone.

I'm in the Nevada Desert in a rural community of approx 40k people. I'm using a wireless antenna pointed at a tower approx 2 miles away. It's offered by the local electric company. 50 bucks a month. 50mb down and 25mb up. Been using this type of system for the last 19 years.

I used to do ops and infrastructure for fixed wireless broadband. This is the radio type service someone above was talking about. When I was in this field 20mbps down and 2mbps up was about as good as it got - now there are services out there that offer 1gbps connection speeds. Look into fixed wireless providers in your area.

I also live in a rural area, but it's new development and they ran full fiber (not fiber hybrid) infrastructure. Locked in my price for life.

If I didn't have a full house streaming and running right now the download rate would be about 80% higher than it shows here.

The closest tower to me is 15-20 miles away. My home town is roughly 12,000 people.

I will definitely look into it.
    Man, that sounds so sweet!

@Tundra2 , I'm not sure if this type of antenna would work 15-20 miles away. But I could be wrong.

I was on the phone with EvdoDepotUSA today. They told me I was too far away for their services. They have an antenna setup. Both directional, and omni-directional based on what would be best for your location.

They said it would not work, and that I was just too far away. They would only reccomend their services if I were within a maximum of 8 miles from a tower. I am at 20 at the minimum. They recommended Blazinghog.

I also on the phone with Blazinghog wireless. I think they said they use Att towers, but am not 100%. The Rep for Blazinghog didn't have answers for what I was looking for.

I asked if port forwarding on the router was available, and if NAT settings were adjustable on the router set up page.
He told me "Sir, I don't know what that is. Can you explain it to me?" I gave him a basic description of both, and he said "I've never heard of that before."

That right there put a bad taste in my mouth about them.

I have been looking for better internet for 12 years.

Long story short Sprint, and T-mobile towers are too far away, and Att towers are either too far away or just barely in range for me.

Editing in: I have no idea about Verizon. I know of no one who uses them locally as a cell provider.

I use a company called UbiFi have for 3 years. Not perfect but there's others out there similar.

Uses the ATT network, you'll have to buy a router and likely a couple outdoor yagi antennas. There's this forum https://ltehacks.com/ that has way more info on service, routers, and antennas than you'll ever want to know.

This is with my daughter watching YouTube and the wife on a Zoom call, not blazing but fast enough to not feel cut off. We have a Mofi4500 router and 2 antennas for a tower about 10 miles away.

All I have is Centurystink in my area and all I can get is 3mbps which really sucks. They gouge me $35 a month for it. What do I need to research to find out about radio internet. I'd be happy with even 10 megs.

If you have a friend that has Broadband service and an approximate Line of Sight to their house there are other ways to send the signal on your own little network that are pretty effective too.

I have used off the shelf Ubiquiti parts to send Broadband through the dense woods in Maine for a few miles and from Mountain to Valley in Montana for 10 miles or so.

The Ubiquiti website has a location finder that can give you an idea of what you might need to setup between any points that you might try too.

Here's my speed from this morning. It's interesting to see the speed difference at different times of the day. This is with me streaming Hulu.

We've got CenturyStink DSL as well and pay $25 a month for 1.5 MB download I think but with all the work from home going on we're lucky to get 1 MB. Got a company installing fixed WiFi north of us and I've contacted them begging them to install a site on the tower that's just 1/4 mile away from us

I joined the Viasat community forum, https://help.viasat.com/internet, so I could research feedback from actual users. It was terrible.
I tried to see if I could login this morning and it just stalled.
