Umm. You’re not driving a trophy truck. Nothing on a stock truck is built for high speed off roading.

Well no. I’m not clairvoyant. Lol. But that is a little better. 100 mph off road is some next level shit. Lol.

I'll make sure to mention it next time! I have zero interest going fast top speed wise but I do love going from 0-60mph often! Love this truck!

I realize this post is two years old, but I just recently got the TRD duals installed on my truck and am getting an intermittent clunk on startup. I'm wondering if it's the same noise you heard. In my case, it's a very subtle, metallic clank/clunk sound. It's usually on a cold start, and occurs after I've turned the key to start the truck, after the starter gets going, but right before the engine fires up. Sort of like it's at the end of the startup. Almost sounds like a metal on metal clank, like maybe there's some play or tolerance somewhere. The truck runs like a dream and the exhaust sounds great, and there is no noise after the initial clank. I'm going to mention it next time I'm in for service, but I can't replicate it, so I'm not terribly optimistic the dealer will have a remedy or know what's happening.

I just bought a brand new 2020 Toyota Tundra and when I drove home I have noticed the same thumping noise sometimes sounds like it is coming from the gas pedal when you accelerate sometime you just let it roll without putting any gas on the foot pedal - you will heard it too.
I get it that you guys all suffer from the same symptom as I read about all you guys posts on this forum. For a brand new truck this thumping/jolting/ticking/clunking/jerking annoying noise (I am questioning who knows if it is the ABS Brake Actuator?). On top of this I or a brand new Tundra owner shouldn't have to be researching on this issue. Toyota just needs to own up to the issue and free people from their worry cause it is stuck in my head now. I am having second thoughts about my new Tundra (only have 33 miles). These machines were not cheap at the dealership after all the invoice markup. Is there something we can do to get our friends at Toyota to fix this actuator or actuators, PLEASE! IS THERE ANY YOUTUBE VIDEOS ON THIS?

I have a 2011 CM with a 5.7, and there is a clunk whenever I start accelerating (normally, not quickly) from a stop. It gets worse as the truck heats up, happens every time. The best way that I can describe it is that it feels like the entire rear axle is shifting (loose). After this initial clunk, the truck shifts smoothly, and never clunks while I'm in motion. The truck has 150,000 miles on it. I'm thinking torque converter. Opinions?

Thank you for the suggestion Kanobi13.
I did took my new 2020 Tundra back to the dealership and I told the service guy about the problem. I managed to convince him to ride with on the passenger side and then he also drove my truck inside the dealer parking lot and he has no clue. His conclusion was that there has to be some sort of actuator that's causing the thumping sound. I was able to convince him to test the sound with another new 2020 Tundra that they have for sale on the lot and we also heard the same thumping sound on that other new Tundra.

He has no clue so I thinking another making an appointment with dealership in my own town to see if they can figure it out. I have an uncle he has been an auto mechanic for Toyota dealership I will find out from him if they have a fix for it.

Can someone let me know if there is a fix or recall!

My truck does not do it in reverse. If I heard while I test drove it at the time I would never purchased it.
I will find time to contact Toyota Corps next week.

My 2020 does the same thing whenever it’s shifted from the park position to drive and usually around the 5mph mark. I guess it’s “normal” but what the hell Toyota?!!

I have the same thing on mine, 2018 SR5 CM. Have no idea what is. It happens just after I start the truck and begin to make a turn.

My 19 has it. I have noticed it in the mornings right after turning out of my driveway. I thought it was a shock but it stayed with the new Kings, then wondered if it was the diff. It has 5000 miles on it now and I just had it regeared and noticed it again. I would agree its the ABS traction control doing a self check.

Hey all, my 2017 has the same noise when I hit about 5mph. However, if my truck has been sitting for a while and I shift from park to drive I get a sort of clunk when I let off the brake to start moving forward. Is this part of the same ABS check or should I be looking for something else? Almost feels like the brakes are letting off hard. Thanks for any help!

Just joined and drove my first tundra home on Friday. Glad it’s normal. Figured had to be some sort of test being it only happened coming out of start up. Thankful for this thread!

had a 2019 wrangler JL that I intended to keep for a long time but less than a year and 9000km later the hinges were already rusting. Was eager to dump it and jump into a full size pick up. Glad I went with the tundra. The kids call her thundra, so it has stuck.

Did you ever figure this out? I've had my 11' DC since November and today I just noticed a subtle clunk that I could feel through the gas pedal and hear from the rear. It did it every time I started off from a stop. Otherwise, the transmission shifts cleanly and with no slipping and no other noises.

When I had the dealer check it out they told me that it is probably the driveshaft referenced in a TSB that I showed them. The TSB was good for trucks up to (I think) 60,000 miles. Mine was far past that (150,000 miles). Anyway, it was too expensive to pay to have it fixed. They said just to drive it, it shouldn't do any harm. I have driven it a few thousand miles since then, towing my travel trailer, and it hasn't gotten any worse. It doesn't bother me any more.

Well it's good to know that it hasn't gotten any worse. That was my fear since I bought mine to two a TT in the near future. I was worried for a second there... Thanks for the info!

BTW, the wife and I have discussed moving to Az when I retire in another year or two. I don't know if I could do the heat of Southern Az ( I still think it'd be better than the heat with humidity here in NC) but I think I could do the high desert a little better. I wanna visit out there again to get my bearings.

I moved to AZ 4 years ago...Love it! I moved from NJ, where the summer humidity is just about unbearable, and I had enough of the snow. It is hot here in the summer, but the very low humidity makes it tolerable. I bought my truck a little over a year ago with not a speck of rust on it...another benefit! The high desert is cooler, and Phoenix is hotter. I am so glad I made the move!

Same clunk here on 2016. Had it on my 2017 Tacoma TRD 4x4 also. It was alarming at first, but once I knew is was "normal", it faded into the background

Shout out to Sh0ck3r!!! I've had what started as an occasional noise at lower speeds the last year or so that has progressive into the "clunk" noise the past few months that he described in his post. Yes, it has been like chinese water torture to me as well!
I could have sworn it was a worn bushing, loose suspension part or something else major! I finally took it to a mechanic this week. After checking everything they could think of that could be loose in the engine bay and suspension, they couldn't find the cause of it. The next step was going to be removing the dash and looking for loose parts, etc. on the interior.
I hopped on the forum last night and started searching. I stumbled on this post and in particular #72 from Sh0ck3r. I thought I'd investigate the wire harness not expecting it to be anything related to my issue. I had a friend wiggle the wire harness coming out of the firewall he shows in his pic. Low and behold I found the culprit! 3-4 zip ties later and the "clunk" noise has been eliminated. I didn't need to put felt anywhere but just secured the harness from moving with the zip ties.
I had the plugs changed a few months back and I think the harness must have been unclipped or pushed to get to the plug to the right of the harness which now explains why it's gotten worse the last few months.
Thanks to the forum I saved myself more money and many future headaches!!!

I want to reiterate what this person said, this too have finally fixed my problem. I recently spent so much money and labor to install all new struts, upper, lower control arms, end links and tie rods. Then paying for an alignment just to find the noise still there. My wire harness was still clipped to the mount, it was never removed but when I moved it back and forth it made the creak/clunk noise that I have been hearing. I removed it from it from the mount and zip tied it TIGHT. Then as post #72 in this thread, I also put weather strips cut to size that I had from Home Depot laying around and put it inside the intake. Either way I am very happy and wished I found this before spending the money.

@TundraforHarambe I'm glad it solved your problem! It's amazing a small wire harness can make such an awful annoying noise that you would never imagine that would be the culprit. Sorry you had to spend so much $$$ trying to chase down the issue. Hopefully this helps others and saves them lots of headaches and money!
