I took some quick pics yesterday with my iPhone and did some hasty touch ups in Photoshop in a sleep deprived state. Could have been better if I had been keeping up practicing photography and using a decent camera, but I was excited to go try out my new Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx tires on my newly painted wheels. The Diamondback tonneau cover is another recent addition. All pictures taken in the south Okanagan valley in British Columbia Canada near Penticton and Naramata, about an hour north of the Canada/US border with Washington state.

Nice! What kind of camera and lenses were you using? I'd like to try some astro photography too. Got to stop using my camera phone, but that's often what I have with me.

    Samsung S10+.

I really want to buy a decent, high quality camera, but I always get overwhelmed with options. Shutter speed, megapixel, this, that, etc. All the bells, and whistles overwhelm me when I start to browse again.

Was digging around in old files looking for something else, and happened across these gifs I made last year in August. Felt like sharing.

Cool! The phones nowadays are better than many digital cameras were not too long ago. I guess that's why I end up shooting a lot of pics on my iPhone 10. Around 2014 I bought a (then new) Sony a58 and gradually bought used lenses when I got a good deal on them, but Sony has discontinued the A mount lenses. Which makes them more affordable, and they're good quality. I also picked up a nice Sony A99 on eBay last year and a few more A mount lenses. But I agree, it can get quite overwhelming with the selections out there and the sheer amount of features. That's why I didn't want to spend too much on brand new equipment. I'm slowly getting used to what I've got. Lots of good free tutorials on YouTube, many of them brand-specific too, but some of them make you want to upgrade so it can be a vicious cycle, lol!

Those are are some really cool gifs with the lightening!

Oh that's too bad! I usually put my images on my computer's hard drive and the images I really like, I make a separate folder for them, so there are duplicates. I don't usually keep them on my camera's memory card for too long. I actually bought a portable hard drive when they were on sale last year (Black Friday or Boxing Day, I wait for big sales whenever possible), just so that I could make extra backup copies on the portable hard drive as well as on my computer. But of course, the hard drive remains unopened. Reading about your corrupted memory card should be motivation to open it and start using it! There's also cloud based storage, but I liked the idea of a portable hard drive, so if I'm travelling and need to free up space on my camera's memory card, or just want to make backup copies and may not have Internet access, a portable hard drive is good to have. If not, a laptop would do the trick too. My laptop is getting pretty old, but I'll see if I can get another 2 or 3 years out it.

I like to buy good quality stuff but not spend too much. So, I look for sales or to buy used. I started buying my lenses on Amazon when I was buying lenses for my crop sensor Sony A58, all lenses were used, though most looked so good I thought they were new. Some were from US sellers, some from overseas (Japan usually). Then I bought my full frame Sony A99 camera last year (on eBay) for about 1/4 of what it cost new in 2012. Still a lot, but it was the flagship model back then, so really not too out of date even today in 2020. Biggest things are lack of touchscreen and "only" 24 megapixels, though I know of many professional photographers who use cameras of similar vintage and specifications or below and do just fine. So, it's plenty good for my part time photography hobby.

I wanted to a have a nice assortment of lenses, especially for the full frame camera. My good luck streak with buying used lenses on Amazon over the last four years ended last year. One lens that was advertised as being "near mint" was anything but, and it came from Japan. I was supposed to get a refund on the shipping and import/duty fees, got the shipping back but will probably never get the import/duty fees back. Another lens came smelling musty and within 1.5 hours of use gave me an error code 5 times that there was no lens attached, but it was. I would need to turn off the camera, remove the lens, reattach and turn the camera back on. Another lens I ordered was a newer updated Carl Zeiss version, and I paid more to get it, but was sent an older, downgraded cheaper version. After three duds in a row, I gave up on buying used lenses on Amazon. Luckily I (eventually) got refunds on those. I took a chance on eBay, got a smoking good deal on an open box 135mm prime lens from a US seller, a barely used fisheye lens from a Canadian seller, half price on a barely used 16-35mm lens missing a lens cap from a huge camera seller in Japan, bought the lens cap from another eBay seller for cheap. I still needed (er... make that wanted) a 24-70mm and a 35mm prime. Figured I was pushing my luck with used, so checked B&H Photo Video in NYC (huge camera goods seller online for anyone not familiar with them). They were clearing out an older model Tamron 24-70 lens. I kind of wanted to stick with genuine Sony lenses, but the ratings were excellent, some people say as good or better than OE lenses (like Sony, Canon, Nikon, etc). Got that one for half price, brand new, with full warranty and got to say, I am totally impressed. Probably my favorite go to lens. They also had (and I think they still do) have a top quality Sigma Art 35mm prime lens for $200 off. Not exactly a screaming bargain, but I didn't want to take chances with used lenses anymore. $200 off was better than nothing off and at least it comes with a full warranty.

They say it's better to have good quality lenses and a cheap camera. My lenses are definitely good. In most cases they cost as much as the camera, give or take, usually a lot more when you consider what the original price was. On one hand, I'm lucky that Sony discontinued the A-mount because it makes the A-mount lenses and cameras cheaper, but the bad thing is that I won't be able to buy new camera to use my nice collection of lenses next time I buy a camera. But, my A58 and A99 should be good for a quite a few more years. The A58 was mid-range in 2014 and the A99 was top of the line professional in 2012. And there are lens adapters. So, I got a pretty nice set up of cameras and lenses by shopping around and also buying for a discontinued lens mount. Still ended up costing a bit, but I bought all of this stuff over the course of a few years to spread out the cost. It looks more expensive than it really it, so I get nervous hauling it around and especially leaving it in the truck which I try to avoid. That's why a lot of my pictures still end up getting taken on my iPhone which I always have with me. Glad I bought that stuff when I did - I couldn't afford to buy it now, even used.

Nice! I thought that scenery looked kinda sorta familiar, "in general" and I see why. If that was near Walla Walla, WA it's about 300 miles south of me. That is a rather odd spot to see elk. Deer, not so much, they seem to be everywhere.

That's a pretty narrow trail for a big rig! Did you have a 53' trailer attached? I always like the challenge of something like that, but still makes me nervous. Nice to see someone else from the PNW and area!

I was pulling a pup 28' trailer. Biggest fear was the "road" not able to hold the weight. Super soft dusty dirt. Had to lock the diffs for the slightest incline. Love the scary days

Yeah, for sure! That "road" looks fine for a pickup, definitely a challenge for a bigger, heavier tractor trailer. Gets the adrenaline pumping!

That's why it looked familiar. Not that I could identify the "exact" location, but the type of landscape and scenery looked familiar.

Have you made it down here before? I love the area. I've never been to Canada, even though I am only a few hours away from the border. I would love to travel B.C. someday. Pictures and hunting shows make it look absolutely beautiful.
