How did you change it out? I’ve drained and filled the pan 2x now. But it’s only about 4qts

You have to drain the transmission pan, remove the transmission pan, clean the pan and replace the filter. Then out the pan back on. Then Disconnect the cool return line and route it into a bucket. Put a pin in the thing to drain the cooler. Fill up the pain with 3 to 4 quarts then run the car for a minute or two to get three to four courts of old fluid from the return line. You keep doing this until the new fluid comes out. Then you have to adjust your level with the check plug

how many quarts of Amsoil did you go through? I just hit 80K and I’d like to do this sometime this year.

I initially bought 3 gallons and 3 quarts. I ended up using 4 gallons, you waste some when you flush out the old fluid and I dropped the check valve plug so I had to buy some more because it kept pouring out when I was trying to get the level right. I used amsoil signature series fuel efficient fluid. The WS fluid is junk. Mine was very dark at 51k miles and I never towed anything. I think I actually put heavy stuff in the bed of my truck twice

Heres a link to a thread that has a good trans fluid flush how-to video. I basically use the technique in the video and buy a case of WS and go through all of it during a flush. The trans has a metal screen for a filter, not regular filter media so I just clean that off when I drop the pan and the pan seal is reusable if undamaged.

I have used Amsoil and WS in my transmissions in two different gen2 tundras and have clocked several hundred thousand miles. There is no noticeable difference in performance or proven benefit in longevity between the two.
I stick with WS now as it’s good enough to meet Toyota’s standards and I can purchase it at my local dealer for a fair price.

I had 99 Corolla with 270k mi never did trans filter just drain and refill every 40k mi fluid was always bright red shifted smooth
Have a 2005 3 series bimmer with 210k mi with original transfluid because its $40 a pint still shifts as good as new

Swapped the fluid out of my 4.7 using the trans cooler method; crank it up and let the tranny pump out 2 quarts, then shut it off and pour 2 new quarts in, repeat till clean fluid comes out. Note the custom tea pitcher holder to keep it from tipping over :)
The pouring back in through the tranny line goes a lot faster when it's hot out.

    THAT^^^^!!!

I was wondering how the **** I could be in three places at the same time without courting a disaster! I love it, man. Seriously...you're a freaking genius. That "anti-tipping" rig is PERFECT!

I live in the Canadian prairies where we get a lot of extreme cold temps. In 2008 I bought a new tundra, the transmission finally failed at 502,000km. I never did any maintenance to that transmission at all. (I still have that truck). In 2016 I bought another new tundra, it now has 336,000km. You guessed it… I haven’t touched the transmission yet. I’m not trying to dissuade maintenance, but if you don’t see yourself owning a tundra for a ton of years you are probably wasting your time and money doing a bunch of extra maintenance.

What kind of use do your Tundra trucks see?

I’m a grain farmer, so lots of gravel roads and fields. A fair bit of hauling in the box of the truck. They probably pull a trailer less than 10% of the time. Biggest issues I’ve had with these is trying to get fuel into them. After about 200,000km they take the gasoline very slowly. Seems there’s a breather or something that gets plugged from all the dusty conditions. Awesome trucks! Combined almost a million kilometres on them. Never touched the engines on either truck.

This is the fuel tank vent that gets plugged up. Pretty easy fix...just sucks to drop the tank.

Transmission is a little different for me. If I perform the fluid change myself the cost really isn't that bad. Toyota checked the fluid and performed a solenoid system check at 30K for free. 60K it was 200.00. Cheap insurance.

I hear people going strong at 400K miles with no maintenance on their transmissions. These are the exceptions not the rule situations. Plenty of people have transmission replacements under 200K miles. That is a 6-8000.00 problem that I don't want if I could have prevented it....for cheap.

Fair enough, that makes sense. I’ll have a look at that breather when I get a chance. Not excited about dropping the tank…
