I bought both my boys their own fly tying starter kits since we have lots of time for both tying and learning how to fly fish. They like it a lot. Especially my 16 year old. He has caught a few fish on his own flies. Biggest smile you've ever seen on a boy.
My 13 year old is still learning how to get the hang of the actual fishing part but his flies look pretty darn good.

Man, it all depends on the type of water you want to fish. So much variety, big water like the Yellowstone and Madison. Smaller waters like the Gallatin, Boulder, upper Shields. Lakes in the Taylor Hilgard.

Well @NV.Recon started this amazing thread...But glad you guys are planning a trip up here! If ya ever make it to the Kalispell area, hit me up and we'll hit some water.

Also check out the north fork of the Blackfoot, around Ovando and Lincoln in August/ September. The evening hatches are amazing.

I fish NW Wyoming. Waiting for the runoff to finish. Dreaming of hopper season. 6E137905-8F2A-42ED-B945-ED28019BC04A.jpgDA0CEB83-FA70-4E91-9D38-096616CBD879.jpg25B9ABC9-AB31-4BC1-A974-A21AE41D6492.jpg73264815-8D43-4B16-831C-5FA1E842BFFC.jpgB25E5399-C34A-4018-937E-9E6D4823D8A4.jpg

I'm just getting started fly fishing out of Denver, I can definitely feel the addiction coming on.

Don't know how many other hobbies I'll have time for.

Anyone got any good tips for a beginner? Besides practice, practice, practice

Dont get hung up on gear. Casting and presentation catch fish. Patagonia makes you look like a douche...and nothing substitutes being on the water....Nothing!

YouTube is your friend and a good local fly shop is your best resource.

Don't buy a ton of gear from the start, get on the water with what you need to get started. As you fish more, you will learn what new gear you want to add.

Practice tying knots at home, this will save you lots of time and frustration on the water.

If your leader or tippet is nicked, frayed or questionable, change it out. This will keep you from losing a fish and kicking yourself in the ass for it. (I know from experience...)

You don't need the most expensive fly rods on the market, cast a bunch and if it feels good and comes with a good warranty, buy it!

I'd imagine you are fishing for trout in CO. You will rarely use the drag on your reel. If you can splurge on one thing, make it a good fly line over a reel.

Beware of car doors! If you break a rod, there is a good chance it was closed in a car door! Haha (Also, from experience)

Don't get hung up on all the bullshit, just have fun and the rest will fall in place!

That's my 2 cents. If you have any questions or anything, feel free to reach out. Love to talk fishing with anyone I can!

Good advice right here, particularly in regards to leaders, car doors, and spending money on reels.

If you don't mind sharing the general location or area please. As I'm planning a 2-3 month multi-state road trip when I get off orders for the military in about a year and want to do some fly fishing among other things and site seeing.

    Thanks
    Edsel.

Hi everyone. As most people on here know, I have severe autism. Fishing is great for me though, because I don’t have to be around people. I’ve always wanted to catch a Tarpon on a fly, but have never been anywhere where I could catch one.
I’ve been preparing to fly fish for sharks. That’s what we mostly fish for the conventional way, but I’ve never done it with a fly. I’ve tied a few flies to resemble mullet, and after we have completed our Galveston move, I’ll get to try them out.
Id love to try for tuna, bonita, mahi, and even a sailfish one day, but first I have to figure out how not to get sick on a boat. It ruins it for everyone.
The only mod I’ve really done to the truck for fishing is the rack I converted to fit low over the bed.

Absolutely spectacular trip to the upper Yellowstone and Thorofare. The 28 mile ride was worth all the pain

Hell yes! Im gonna try to do a couple weekends down on the Blackfoot, out the back of the topper for the first time. We planned to go to Yellowstone this year, but everything is such a cluster, we are just gonna drive and avoid people now. Thinking following the Madison south and the Bitterroot back north.

What topper did you order from them? If ya get free time and want to hit some local water . Hit me up...

Wait till September. Smaller crowds, great fishing. Lots of places to get away from crowds around even in July.

Sweet truck and I think most people using fishing as a nice getaway as well.
Went tarpon fishing last year down in Puerto Rico. The guide brought both spinning and fly reels for us. I ending up boating one on the spinner and my buddy was able to get one to take a fly. The tarpons mouth is so tough it frayed right through the line within 15 mins... not much time to get it into the boat on a fly reel. I’d definitely recommend PR if you’re interested. Pretty cheap down there considering they’re still recovering from the hurricane and some decent flights so easy to get to.
