My head hurts after scrolling through this thread.

my question is, what are the best handheld two way radios that don’t require a HAM license? Primary use is for camping and truck to truck communication on the trail.

Just getting started with researching radios...

wouldn’t MURS be better for simple outdoor camping / hiking / driving radios? No license required and better range than FRS.

still might just fork over the money for the GMRS license, but wanted to get some more feedback on MURS radios.

FRS and MURS only can only transmit of a maximum of 2 watts. Kind of a joke... With GMRS you can go up to 50 watts, HAM up to 1500 watts PEP depending on the band you're using. This is why I went with a HAM dual band and removed the transmit lock over the FRS/GMRS frequencies. With regards to licensing, the GMRS is payment only and grants you access to repeaters. IIRC FRS and MURS do not generally have repeater access. Only HAM allows access to APRS and other advanced functions.

@TransNone13 yeah, that’s pretty much what I’ve figured out from my research. Trying to decide if I should pay for the GMRS license or stick with MURS for the 1-2 times a year I might use it. Of course, could do HAM instead too. I guess the main deciding factor would be who I want to to talk to and if I’m going on a trip with a group, what they are using.

    :/

Knowing me... I’ll end up getting HAM and GMRS licenses so I can use whatever I feel like. ...and end up not using it except once a year! :)

yes and with FRS you can only transmit 2 watts on a few channels, the rest are limited to 1/2 watt. Basically FRS is good for kids playing with walkie-talkies in the same house

This is what I did, the HAM licenses then noticed I missed one and paid for the GMRS. Haven't used GMRS yet, and I still don't have an HF rig yet-only used them at work. Not ready to plunk down that kind of $$$$.

Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. That’s what I did. Got GMRS first. Then Technician license.

Finally picked up a better antenna. Figured it would be useful while driving around in the mountains.
Ended up with a B4505CNS originally by my own mistake (no ground plane version), so I ordered a second antenna BB4505CS and got that in yesterday.
    ACtC-3fkDKuKERNY8m5gb_c-oizLhhBOsM_D7J5k_e4f527ac1fdc227fb71474b5df309557bdac9399.jpg

I did a quick test while the B4505CNS was installed as I was leaving Estes Park form visiting my parents at their camp site.
I was on my MXT275 (15W) and my dad was using his Garmin Rino Handheld (5W). We got some decent range and were clear for most of the transmission up until then end where the mountain began to block the signal.

Also picked up a couple of Midland GXT1000VP4 to use around the yard primarily since the Rino's are a little heavy to put on a waist band when wearing athletic shorts.

Great piece of eqiuipment, starting to use it , the clarity and range is awesome ! Havent tried it to its full potential range though although 36 miles is obviously not going to happen, should be good if it works 10 miles though. !

I have some BTech MURS and 2 Retevis MURS radios and they work well for about a mile-1.5ish miles. Use em car to car, 4 wheeling in a close group, around camp, and ski/snowboard and they work well and “inexpensive”. I’ve been happy with them. That said I’m looking to step up to GMRS at least in the vehicles for additional range. Hope for 10-12 miles

So here is my proposed setup in the truck, what do you all think?

    - Midland MTX275 to a Tram mag mount NMO on roof

Tram 1173 premium 35" coil UHF 450-470MHZ NMO antenna for around town.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S982C56/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_JM12SPGCEA2242MEQFVH

Midland 3db “ghost” low pro antenna for wheeling / closer proximity

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08429ZT37/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_QTQX1MA0C8KKZBVCXYNX

I might hold out till Midland releases their 50 watt micro mobile to see if it’s a remote head unit like this or if it models after their current 40 watt unit. I’d like more power but I want to install the radio in the console and just run a plug for the handset to the dash. My use case needs the remote head setup. Don’t feel like opening the console every time to check or change channels.

What’s your reason for wanting 2 different antennas?

Radiation pattern is different on both. The taller one should in theory punch towards the horizon more in a “cone” pattern and be better for distance over a relatively normal elevation. The ghost radiates in a flat “cookie” pattern and should be better if I’m out wheeling in uneven terrain and low overhanging branches etc, should punch better from what I’ve heard in varying elevations. No antenna is perfect for every situation and being and NMO mount....I can just unscrew them, takes about 20 seconds to swap.

    Can anyone confirm/deny my thoughts?

Ahh, makes sense. I’m not a hundred percent sure and run the ghost antenna but run it in dense forest. No issues within a couple miles

A lot of new GMRS HT’s hitting the market from Retevis, as well as a 20 watt mobile. I’m interested in trying out! Looking at their GMRS repeater as well. Still going to go Midland for the micro mobile in the truck is the plan. Could use their inexpensive mobile radio for the base station, only about $85!
