I took mine by the dealership yesterday, said they needed an Appt. to have a tech take it and reproduce the issue. I showed them the TSB and everything said they still needed a tech to drive it and reproduce. Is this normal?

I'm worried the guy will drive it and not turn up any incline or know how/when it makes the noise and not be able to reproduce. Any idea's to make sure this gets fixed?

All is normal to setup an appointment as this is not a recall issue, so tech can see that the skid plate is the issue. Usually if the tech cannot replicate the issue they will ask yourself to do it or you can request to do it right from the get go.... best way is to find the most common angle your skid plate make the noise. My was in reverse at a left turn. Good luck!

Strange is that the parts kit is basically the hardware kit the skid plate came with in the first place. Not sure why they called it "silencer kit".

I have seen some made before 2015 with rear shim/spacers that looked completely different. If you look at the older installation instructions here https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0176/5842/files/PT938-34140_TOYOTA_MCDONOUGH.pdf

    vs

Current installation instruction https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/installation/my14 tundra trd skid plate-dio issb.pdf

Looks like they changed the hardware? So the question is for those with the noise on their TRD skids, when you took it off again, did you have the newer shims or the older one piece one shown on the first set of instructions?

All in all, despite the tech tip telling you not to add insulation material, I think a thin sheet of rubber in the right places solves it regardless if its old or new hardware just like how some of you did.

Honestly...it is a super easy fix. Go to Dollar Tree and get some duct tape, drop the skid plate, look for rub marks, put a couple layers on tape down and reinstall and you will be good to go. I should start selling silencer kits!

Agree. Dont even need to look for rub marks, the culprit is always just the rear two bolt area that contacts the cross member. Thats the TRD OR package one one never had noise issues since its not bolted there. Toyota could've simply just added some rubber washers and called it a day. They've made it far more complicated than it needs to be.

Resurrecting this thread. I’m having popping noises coming off of my brakes and at low speeds on my 19 pro. Thought it was my suspension as well, but this may be it.

Come someone elaborate on the sound the skid plate makes? Anyone with a 19 having these issues as well?

Can't say on the 19's but when my truck was doing it it was a creak and pop when I would be turning and going up a slight hill/driveway at slow speeds

Mine started rattling anytime I hit a bump.. Sounded like the front end of my truck was coming apart. Turns out I was missing a few screws, my only guess is the dealer didn't put them back in or tighten them after being serviced. I ended up buying the RCI skid plate.

Could be your abs check...or it could be the skid. There is a thread (not sure where) with a detailed outline for how to fix as well as a TSB for these damn things. Proper hardware install and orientation is critical and really its more about a design flaw.

Anyway, I followed the thread and used some 1/8 inch flat rubber squares I got from Lowes to ensure the noise would go away. No issues since.

Yeah mines not the suspension, I'll check under the truck today and see if the skidplate is hitting anything and grab some rubber washers!

At the dealer today (6 hours!!) Yes, they confirmed the squeaking as I told them when I made an appointment. They loosened it up, confirmed the rubbing, cleaned any debris that were there, and then told me that the "silencing kit" would be my responsibility at $120!! I showed them the tech tip, and they said that TSBs they will pay for, but not "tech tips".

I am really disappointed that they (Dolan Toyota in Reno) is taking this position. I have been here for six hours just to be told that... argh! Very disappointed..

Simple fix - go to the home center and purchase an insulation tape for less than $20, remove the skid plate, apply the insulation tape where you see rub marks, re-install skid plate and enjoy a bottle of beer or two.

I put two 1/8th inch plastic washers on all the hardware and the squeak is gone dirt cheap 20 minute fix.
