If situations like this is someone s calling then they are a little crazy. I know some in the military that would do it, but I don t think it would end well for anyone.

Thank you to all who serve and protect. Threads like this make me so glad to live in East Tennessee where we largely do not have the problems facing some cities and the national scene.

The first night of the riots, there were a few bad apples that threw rocks in windows in downtown Knoxville. We quickly sent SWAT team in and it very quickly put an end to all this chaos in about 45 minutes. Since then, we have had no violence and just a few peace walks.

It is a shame that no one respects the police anymore. I have been pulled over about 4 times in my life and have been very respectful and they have been respectful back to me. I would never resist or anything regardless. If I tried taking one's taser or gun I would expect to get shot.

A few bad ones ruin it for the millions of good officers though....

I have 2 college friends who are LEO's and still enjoy it and love going to work every day.

    Reviving this thread...

I've been contemplating a career change at 35. I come from a LE family (grandfather, father, brother), and to me a career in law enforcement was always on the back of my mind. I decided however to pursue an engineering degree and have been making my way through that field for about 10 years now. More and more I find this job to be unfulfilling, meaning that if I happened to leave a company there would always be someone to take my place and design the next best widget or whatever. Point is, it doesn't seem like my job matters. I know it would be a pay cut, and shitty hours, less safe, etc.. but after a long conversation with my dad the other day, I was assured that I have the right mentality to become a police officer and i'm doing it for the right reasons. All it takes is one good interaction with someone to change their perspective on police officers or life for that matter. I'm not naive enough to think i'm going to change the world or anything but I think the world is hurting for people with a level head in the LE field. I suppose you could label it as a calling but it took a long time for me to figure it out.

Naturally, I came to a Toyota truck forum to see if anyone had similar experiences (being the old guy in the academy, huge career shift, am I insane). Anyways, thanks for your thoughts.

I've got 25 years in, LE 5 as a local at a Large University and 20 as a FED. I want into LE after I was in the Navy for 6 years so going to the local academy was like going back to boot camp but you could go home at night. I did several jobs with my PD from patrol to bike to a drug task force. Right after 9/11 I jumped ship to a federal agency and have been here 20 years this OCT. I can tell you the FED academy was easy coming from a local, the PT, range time were different, and the laws are different but easy enough to learn. I can tell you right now that FED pay is WAY better than my local PD even with all the OT and side jobs I worked. But there's a Catch, (LEAP), Law Enforcement Availability Pay. YOU are ON CALL........ Its not work your shift and done, its odd hours different start times and lots of Nights and weekends and having rotating days off.
Now I know every agency is different, since we Travel all the Time and I mean all the Time!!! Ill let you guys guess and maybe win a prize.....:). In my Hay-day I had several years where I spent 24 to 30 Weeks out of the county, now granted I made a TON of $$$$ in OT and had a FRACKING incredible ride but it takes a toll on your marriage your mental and physical health. Luckily I have an Incredible wife who has a great Job that affords us to spend as much time together when I am on my days off. I'm to the point in my carrier that I seriously looking at retiring next year and hanging up the badge and gun, snice most FED LE jobs you are under a 6C retirement (look it up), With my age, time in service and buying back my NAVY time I'll be good to go.

    Now Im going to RANT-----
(RANT ON) Now days there is a CELL phone aimed at you Anytime you Pull a Badge and Lord Forbid you draw Leather, Everyone is a Judging you for the Least thing, Now more than Ever your are under the Microscope and Judged by the court of Fools that's become our society no matter what you do. (Rant OFF).

So in general I say if your going to go in to LE, Frist make sure you can handle the Stress its not for the faint of heart, have an outlet ( I have a Ranch that's my go-to Happy Place) and if your married make sure your wife can handle the stress that comes with the job, that's one of the the keys to surviving a carrier in LE. Unfortunately I've seen too many of my brothers and sisters turn to the bottle to cope and get divorced to count, also the ones we've lost to suicide, it breaks my heart buts that facts of being in LE. Some days are good, some days are FRACKING GREAT some days are rough and some days you Never want to repeat ever again.

Any questions feel to PM me.

Firefighters saw big and continued support after 9/11, funny, cops didn't seem to get the same.

Divorce rate is 75% for FFs in urban areas. No thanks. Cops may be the same there. I like the Fed idea.

Not a LEO, but you might be surprised how many of us out there support LEO's. Even those folks that still want and need LEO's in uraban scenarios. Obviously a game changing career decision. Under the microscope big time. I see you are in Kali. Not a bad thing. Kali is a big state and there are a lot towns that are cop friendly. Pay cut? Of course, but you'd be surprised what salaries are being offered now even in a Kali "small town" nowadays. Relocate possible? Lots of options. You didn't mention if you have a wife and kids. That obviously could be a game changer depending on where, quality of life, house prices, schools, pay of course. There are always tradeoffs. We have lots of active duty and retired LEO's here along with firefighters and EMT's. All noble professions that don't get the respect in some places. You mentioned that your grandfather, father, and brother are LEO's. I'm thinking it's in your bloodline. Do what feels right for you....

I appreciate the input, and I know that there's quite a bit of support for LEO's out there even if it's not out in the open. I'd be relocating out of Kali for sure for obvious reasons. Having said that, do I want to be some engineer at a company forever? Probably not. I have a wife and a 1y/o and know how tough being an leo can be on your family. I can remember several times where my dad would have to get up at 2-3 am out of nowhere to be at the station for a homicide investigation of something along those lines. Scheduling around holidays is tough but depending on the department a lot of the older guys didn't mind swapping shifts so that the younger guys could be at home with their new families. Times have changed for sure so I don't know how that works anymore. My wife is not 100% on board yet but her biggest hangup is that i'd be "wasting" my engineering degree and abilities. I think you're right though that this is in my bloodline and this crossroads was inevitable.

Since you're an engineer, try something similar to a cost-benefits analysis.
COSTS: Lower pay, possibly MUCH lower at least in the beginning
More time away from family, including unpredictable time away
Having a large portion of the population hate you just for the uniform
As @kittyhawk stated, being under a very uncomfortable microscope just for doing your job, and possibly being punished for doing your job RIGHT
Added stress and difficulties of family life - can your wife handle it?
There may be others - add as needed

BENEFITS: Fulfillment of your sense of duty, the knowledge that are ARE making a difference, if only for the person you helped that day
Depending on your geographic location, possible respect and admiration from the people you protect

There may be other benefits, but the sense of duty one overshadows all of them in my opinion. If your sense of duty overcomes the costs, the decision has already been made.

I fully respect my local LEO's. If I see one, or even a few, in a restaurant, I pay for their meals, anonymously if possible.

I think my sense of duty is the one thing that is overshadowing all of it. That is something that you just don't get in the engineering world at all. I'm ok with being hated by many even if it means i'm doing the right thing. That's really the definition of integrity isn't it? I really wanted to join the military, but having scoliosis and a subsequent spinal fusion was an automatic disqualification. After talking to the department, those conditions wouldn't disqualify me from service as long as I can pass the physical tests. The back thing has never bothered me (as evidenced by my motocross riding) and at this point it just comes down to my family being ok with it.

It's the best job ever, you will never have a job that pays to see/deal with what we do. Yeah more scrutiny now, but you can still have fun. Despite what the MSM and Social Media say, majority of people appreciate what we do.

I'll be a devils advocate but you can make sooo much more money with any engineering degree. You have a family and financially supporting them should come at #1. I wouldn't bother with this line of work at all then. From a risk benefit analysis standpoint its a losing game. Most of my friends make healthy six figures with their B.S. civil and mechanical engineering degrees while i had to get an advanced professional degree to achieve the same.

If your work is unfulfilling there are plenty of other options within the engineering ethos. The beauty of your degree is that there is no ceiling. I had a friend work in defense contracting for a decade and hated every minute of his life. He quit and contemplated a career change but took a chance at another job working for Dewalt and has a passion for his field again from a company that appreciates him. Hes much happier and makes more.

I'm former LEO , and I would not recommend it. i started back in 05. As others have said , politics can make it a miserable job. In my experience in my dept you couldn't be a "gray area". We either had by the book officers that imo were too over the top or ones that you knew were doing shady stuff. Being a public forum, I won't share the department. The middle I called gray area which I thought were the best cops were in the middle. Used good judgement common sense and stayed out of trouble in the dept. They were usually run off by the other two types. Money wasn't great and it was not nearly as fulfilling as one would think. As a local cop, you deal with generally the same people over and over in your zone and 99 percent of you public interactions are negative. Yes there are supporters out there, but they generally aren't someone you come into contact with on a daily basis through the course of the job. Back then I was just mic'd up and dash cams. Body cams would be horrible to me personally. From the public standpoint it's transparency which is good but the stress is extreme. It's not even doing anything wrong of why it's bad but just the stress of knowing someone can go back and Monday morning quarterback your every move. The person who said academy is boot camp but home every night is spot on. For me I left it and went into banking which I've been doing for a long time now. Pays better and the only way I'm going to die doing my job is choking on my lunch or someone going postal at the office lol leo is 95% pure boredom and 5 % sheer terror. It's the mix of not knowing where that 5% is going to pop up in your day that makes the job hard.

All of that being said there are negatives and positives to any job. What's important to you may not be to me. The parts I liked or that were comedic relief , broadcasting your mic when at the urinal on accident for the whole dept to hear never got old at laughing at, weren't stuff careers are built on. I liked the excitement of it , but that also rarely happened. I liked the brotherhood when politics didn't screw it up. I can go into more detail if you want just PM me.

One other thing to consider. Anytime there is a corrupt cop or someone on the job screws up, you get the brunt of it. Every Rodney king and officers associated, George Floyd and officers associated, anyone in the uniform gets to answer for those assholes. It's an indefensible position to be in. In my dept we had an officer fired for getting a bj from a young girl he pulled over for speeding in the back of his squad car to get out of a ticket. Everyone in our department had to wear that criticism for months from the public when we put on the uniform because he was "one of us". Every traffic ticket you get jabs or jokes or insults because of one person you have nothing to do with having a moral compass so effed up they can't even find the men's room.

Im hittin 19 years and am being forced out if I dont vax. So Im out in a month. It was a great job when I started but the last 5 years have been awful. We need cops but I'v done my time and have been treated poorly. Its about making a better life for the criminals now at the cost of a cops career.

Just starting my 34th year on the job.I plan on being done on my 35th just because it’s time and my badge number is 35. I am currently the chief of police and what keeps me going is the new guys that come on the job wanting to make a difference. 34 years ago I wanted to do the same, I have been very fortunate being able to experience a lot of aspects of the job. 19 yrs narcotics, 9 yrs patrol with 21 years as SWAT in between and 5 yrs as COP . Law enforcement has changed a lot in the last 11/2 yrs especially in NYS… not going to get into the politics but, we need guys right now that want to make a difference! You will not get rich, you will get frustrated, but in the end, saving that child, rescuing that person, making that awesome arrest will make you feel great about the choice you made! I say go for it! I don’t feel being rich is about how much money you have in the bank, it’s about how much difference you have made in your life… good luck with your decision….!!!!

The hardest part in AZ is staffing, for the most part politics haven't affected us in AZ. But we are so damn short staffed we really only have time for crimes in progress. Every day is getting our asses kicked but it's almost fun. I have 17 years left
