I'm looking to install the avital 4301lx in my 08 tundra. I have installed this same one in my old gmc. the only thing holding me back is the transponder key! in my gmc all I had to do was cut the tumbler transponder wire and get the truck to learn an inline resister as the key very cut dry and easy. but this set up intimidates me a bit, ive seen the transponder bypass modules but I'm not sure how to program and ive seen the one where you have to leave a key under the dash which I do not want to do. if anyone has any information please let me know. Thank you

I had an electronic bypass module and it gave me nothing but trouble with it. I ended up going with one where you put a key in the box and its hidden under the dash. And then I was able to get a key cut at a locksmith for $4 that now can start the truck.

does that bypass all the keys and does having the key in the box and a key with a chip (factory key) confuse eachother?

Yeah, it does but it also happened with the electronic bypass module. I have to wait about 5 seconds before the key will crank the ignition if I forget to remote start it. Remote start works like a champ though.

do you have to wait with a regular metal key, if not you can remove the transponder chips from the other factory key(s)

If it's anything like the viper, there is a module that mimics the key when activated, but deactivates if the brake is pressed without the key in the on position.

that's the way my gmc was, it always thought the transponder chip was there but never was confused by the factory chipped key. it never knew the difference between the factory key and a metal copy it worked flawlessly. I'm hoping to do something similar with out rigging it or it being problematic

My taco only activates the transponder when the remote start is activated.

In otherwords, I can't just turn the ignition with a non-chipped key to start the truck. It won't start.

What kit did your GMC? The same as above?

well yes i would like to use the same remote starter as it worked very well. i did not use a bypass module on it all i did was cut the transponder signal wire to the ecu (at the key switch) and used a resister to go between the power feed wire to the transponder reader and the transponder signal wire than put the ecu into key learning mode to learn the resister and never had any issues. maybe i can do the same but like i said i don't want to rig or butcher anything unless i know itll be fail safe

Huh, I never thought to hit the brake when I use the key. I'll have to try that. I've only had the remote start in for like two weeks and I've conditioned myself to keep the foot off the brake until the key is in.

Regarding the non-chipped key. It starts the truck just fine. The way my other original is made, I can't access the chip to take it out. I wish I could. I can buy a blank one with the plastic over the head at home depot but it's like $70. I use my plain $4 copy for backup.

it would shut off when the break was hit but i was able to put any key that would be cut to turn the ignition cylinder, the truck would start with any cut key with or with out using the remote starter. * this was in my GMC not my tundra *

Yeah I don't know that I'd like being able to use any key to start it... kinda the point of the transponder key for safety.

I live in LA County... too much auto theft here for that :annoyed:

ive never really worried about that i usualy leave my doors unlocked because id rather someone just take the change cup than bust my locks doors or windows. that's just my take on it, i also have home security cameras and full insurance incase something does happen

okay i just did a little experiment i got a blank key cut for the tundra with no chip just a blank metal key, itll start and run for about 5 seconds than died okay it knows theres no chip great. but them i held my chipped key up to the ignition and tried to start with the blank again and it started and ran if i hold the chipped key up against the ignition right under the metal cut key than removed it after about 8 seconds and itll stay running! maybe i can de chip my keys and place one of the transponder chips to the transponder reader ring (just an idea)

I'm new to this site and looking to to have a remote starter installed. With all the back and forth you guys really seem to know what your talking about. Which starter us recommended? I want to also use one key fob to start truck and also lock/unlock truck.
