I've had the TG-4 and TG-5 and can attest to the "Tough"ness of this line. They were my work cameras and took serious abuse. They are also easy to operate and take excellent photos for the money. The macro feature is amazing.

I also have multiple GoPros. The GoPros are great for video, but the Olympus is easier to use in almost every way.

having a few issues these days so have not picked up a camera in what feels like forever.

went downtown to wander the protests. may or may not share anything more than the below images. there are a lot of angry people out there. surprised at the demographics of the crowd. pretty mellow considering what was happening just a few days ago. just about every shop on 16th street is boarded up. homeless encampment at the capitol is going strong. tents have moved out onto the sidewalk.

keeping an eye on things. may go back down.

Anyone here using a Sony A6400? I've been playing around with my girls older Canon camera and have decided that I'd like to upgrade it to a mirrorless camera for the ability to shoot "silent" (electronic shutter) since I will be taking it hunting with me and trying to capture pics of deer/fox/hawks/etc.

Am I on the right track here thinking that a mirrorless APS-C is my best option for the zoom/silent shooting capabilities? Looking to keep the camera itself under $1000 since this is a hobby that I'm just now getting into lately. I already know I'll have to invest quite a bit in a nice telephoto lens as well.

I’ve got a pair of Mississippi Kites hanging around the house for the last week or so. Was finally able to get a decent shot of one of them yesterday.

Sony lenses are expensive, a 6400 is still APSC lenses albeit slightly smaller as mirrorless. I do paid work with 5DIV's, FF bulk. Given your requirements I'd go MFT maybe an Olympus, your bag will be less weight and bulk, double the focal length equivalent for distance, lots of compatible MFT lenses. There's some discussion threads about this on DPReview, and the benefits of MFT for wildlife on the net.

Trying to learn to manually shoot fast-action stuff. Took about 2500 shots yesterday. Took me all day to dial in my settings and practice following the ball on the field, refocusing constantly, and getting a good shot. Finally toward the end of the day I started to figure it out and get better images.

Pictures are in order from early in the day ---> later in the day.

I am shooting with a Nikon D3400 (I know, nothing fancy) and in this case just the kit lens (70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G) because it's the only lens I have with this much zoom. Any pointers or direction to good learning resources would be appreciated!

In case you're wondering my kid is the stud keeper that the other parents refer to as "the wall."

Couple of my other cute kid just for posterity:

Back button focus (assign button on the top right back of camera body) and focus track holding it down with your thumb (not sure what it’s called on Nikon) while the focus dot is on the subject, shoot bursts. This is where a fast lens and gear/cards that’ll give you high FPS help when shooting sports. Then pick keepers that capture the moment and edit them.

When you say "fast lens" what aperture should I be going for?

Thanks for the feedback. The image you mention wasn't staged or set up at all, just an organic capture of that moment while she was playing with her friends. I agree that the composition could be better, but I also feel like setting up it would have made it more clinical. I think it's a perfect! ;)

I love this thread. I fool around with my wife's camera but taking pics is something I enjoy. I should probably make an effort to learn how to use this thing better. These are all at 1080, hopefully they fit in the browser ok
