Very wise decision Robert ! Your transmission especially will thank you for doing the 4:88s with those bigger tires. I assume they are doing a full master kit with those gears, ( all new bearings, shims, seals etc ). $2100 seems like a great price. Lot of labor in that swap, especially the front end. Some shops don't even like to tackle these front diffs. Are you having Kieths gear guy do the install or someone local in Arizona ? Keep us posted ........

@CM-LENNY It was the strong recommendation from Keith that got me to pull the trigger, and yes, a full master kit too. I'm actually having it installed at AZ Differential Specialists, in Phoenix. A while back I had the Auburn Pro LSD installed, and I really wanted to do it then, but I was talked out of it, by someone I won't mention. At the time, they said you should only regear if you upgrade to 37" tires or larger. Me not knowing any better said okay. They also added in a Yukon Master kit at the time of the Auburn Pro install which added another $650 plus labor. Everyone I tell this story too is amazed. I guess I shouldn't have had to do that Yukon Master kit at 7,000 miles. Needless to say I've been taking my business elsewhere. Hope things work out this time around.

Sounds like you're on the right track now. Kinda funny, I remember the first time I went up to Kieth's shop and saw it wasn't what I expected. (kinda small and a little messy). But as you know from dealing with Kieth, one of the nicest and most knowledgeable guys you will ever meet. All his staff at his facility are so friendly. I am guessing you are getting the truck back tomorrow with the 4:88's ? Not sure if you tow, but no tow for that break in period. Keep me posted...........

@CM-LENNY Totally agree on the visit to his shop, definitely not the image I had in my head, but it works for him, at the moment. Was nice hearing his stories, especially about his 5 yo son and his racing stories and videos. I did get the break in do's from him too. I don't tow anything yet, so no worries there. It went on lift midday today so maybe more like Wednesday morning I'm thinking.

Oh man... I mentioned I was thinking about gears and got cussed over on tundra talk a couple years back. I was told the same thing, 37s get gears and I was an idiot for thinking I should re gear with 35s. I didn't realize Keith thought this was a good thing to do.

I haven't been paying much attention, but did you even get those cats and midpipes made-up/installed? I sold Kieth the other 2 I had. Should be mid next week before I can get on it, to give a good test. Will update ASAP!

He, in fact, said it was the first thing to do... lol. I guess Tundras have a 7th gear we can never normally get into, and regearing changes the game. Even the sales guys over at Just Differentials said the same thing.

Really? That definitely goes against the grain. Most anyone you talk to says you don't need to unless you go with bigger than 35s. I'll be looking forward to what you have to say about them. That 7th gear isn't exactly a gear, it when the torque converter locks up.

Hopefully Keith @dirtydeeds can explain it better, at least his reasoning behind it.

Re-gear is strongly recommend on these newer trucks with the 6speed trans. With the bigger than stock tire, the trans is searching for 5th to 6th gears. Searching = heat = shortened life. I love my 4:88s.

I must drive like a grandpa... Mine doesn't search between 5th and 6th. Now it is easy for it to unlock the torque converter in 6th gear... It takes a steady foot to keep it from unlocking on an incline.

@TruckyTruck Here is a link from Another Site where Keith explains the gearing a little bit.

I'm sure 25 sets of 5.14's would sell instantly!

Install went great IMO. I picked truck up last Wednesday and should have my 500 miles logged by Friday. I'm stuck in Sunday Driver mode and can't wait to jump those needles. Did you change your gear oil right after break-in, or did you wait a little longer? Also... I noticed this prior before I regeared, that on occasion there is a small lag in time, I'm talking a fraction of a second in time, where there seems to be slippage or the engagement isn't crisp or instant, whether that be in transmission or gears... It doesn't happen all the time, just on occasion. I noticed it a little now too, is that normal? I've never paid attention to it in other cars, only more so now, bacause of the monetary investment.

Believe that is just our good ol electronic transmissions. Their is a thread on here about that exact subject. I did do a rear diff oil change at 600 miles in, the installer said not completely needed, but I wanted piece of mind. Curious on a few other things Robert. What did your installers use for diff oil ? My guys used 90wt Shaeffer up front and 140wt in the rear. I trusted their judgement, as the mechanic that did my swap is supposed to be the best around, and been doing diffs for 20 years. Also, do you have any gear whine at all, ( ever so slight ) ? They installed Revolution gears ( made in the same factory as most all gears including Nitro ), and I get a very slight whine at light throttle. Coast is fine, on the pedal under acceleration is fine, just that light throttle at cruise I get a slight whine. Had a second set installed and same result. I saw all the digital pics of the patterns during install and all looks great. Thoughts ?

I have not noticed any whining sounds at all., at any time. As far as weight gear oil, I'm almost certain I remember hearing 85w 140 in both front and rear. In rear, I also have the Auburn Pro LSD. With that you need to add Auburn Gear Limited Slip Friction Additive - 504102. Do you have the Auburn? Maybe if no friction additive was used, could that cause the whine? Shop also said it wasn't necessary to immediately change gear oil at 500, that maybe I could go to around 2000. I won't wait that long though. They said the do a thorough job wire wheeling everything and cleaning prior to install. They did say a oil change every 25K was a smart decision too.

I do not have the Auburn, so that takes out that equation. Keith has a good diff guy, so I may shoot up to his place one day and take him for a test drive. ( just 30 min up the freeway from me ). Thanks Robert, truck is always looking sweet !
