New member here, just joined because I owned a 4Runner and FJ for several years and they were both extremely dependable and fun. I retired at the age of 50 and my wife and I have been traveling the country for the past two years in our RV and finally decided to stop and hang out here in the Cottonwood/Sedona area of Arizona for a while, maybe forever, because we're really into ATVs and 4wheeling and hiking and camping and this place has so much to offer if you're into enjoying the great outdoors... we are loving it here!
Anyway, I don't know much about Tundras so I'm here to learn before I buy one.
Looking at a 2020 Crewmax with the small bed, and 4WD. We'll probably get the SR5 trim because we're budgeting about $40k.
Are there any issues with the 2020 model? Should we wait for the 2021 or possibly look for a 2019 model on a dealer lot? I obviously don't know if there's any significant differences in the various years.

    Thanks

Welcome from Florida. No issues with any of those years just a little different options between the 19 and the 20 such as apple CarPlay and keyless ignition.

You mention towing an rv. The 19+ don’t have a trans cooler. Might want to look in to that first. There are several threads on here about it.

2018, last year for transmission cooler and no Apple car play.
2021 may not have the 5.7 V8 motor.
    Good luck with your decision.

Not sure what you are looking to do with your Fundra as far as leaving it stock or adding a lift and tires to it. But the 2017 models were the last ones to NOT have the TSS systems in the grill and have new nanny safety issues as well as still having the trans cooler. But if you just want a new stock truck then the 2020 and up will be just fine.

not to thread-jack, but i've been curious about mine. Mine's an SR5 and has the hitch receiver and factory plugs on the bumper, but no brake controller. Does that mean that mine does not have the "tow package", and therefore no Trans cooler??

Not sure about tow package. Do you have the tow/haul button? I think that’ll determine if you have the tow package or not. Also not sure what year your truck is, but if it’s 19+ it doesn’t have a real trans cooler no matter what package or trim level you have.

i do have (and love) the tow/haul button. It's a 2015... If tow package, why/how is there no brake controller?

Did they have factory brake controllers in 2015? Only other tundra I had was a 2010 and it didn’t have one even with tow package. I’d get a P3 if I were you. Some people have issues with the factory one and change it to a P3. There might also be a factory one for sale if you want that one.

Pretty sure 2016 or 2017 was the first year Toyota integrated a brake controller from the factory.

carplay would be enough for me to get the 2020

crewmax, 4x4, LED headlights, big gas tank. I say go for a 2020 if you cannot wait for the 2021. Or you can always lease a 2020 and if the 2021 sucks keep your 2020 or trade in in 3 years to a 2024 :)

Look at the front of your radiator on the passenger side. If there is a smaller cooler in front of the radiator that is the transmission cooler.

I also have a 2015. Although advertising indicated a IBC would be included, this was not the case. However, 2015 models with the tow package do have the same wiring harness as 2016, ‘17. You can buy the OEM IBC with a replacement plastic dash insert and have the feature. This is what I did.

I would only be towing a small trailer with a couple ATV's, 3k# max. and no mountain towing at all, so no trans cooler needed.

Go for either a 2020 or 2021. I doubt the 21 will have many changes other than the pro color and the model with the bed storage system. I believe Covid pushed back the redesign by a year and the 2021 is more of a filler year so not likely many changes. 2020 upgraded a ton (small things here and there but overall a ton of nice tweaks). Go check out TundraDude34 on YouTube and check out his playlist for the 2020. He tested a 1794 and now has a pro. Lots of good info there in easy to watch formats.
