Anybody out there know if the factory trailer brake controller on my 2016 TRD Crewmax is compatible with my soon to be new 2020 Jayco White Hawk 24MBH? We are picking it up in Salt Lake City and bringing it back to Denver Colorado in about a week. I’ve heard there are some issues with this year tundra not working properly with certain electric trailer brake systems. If anybody out there has any input or information on this it would be great! I’m guessing if I take I-80 or I-70 back from Salt Lake City hauling a 29’ TT I’ll want my trailer brakes to be working.

My assumption is yes it will work, but I'm not 100% sure. I have pulled a 2014 Jayco with a 2017 Tundra with factory brake controller and it all worked fine. I have also pulled a 2015 Forrest River TT with a 2018 Tundra and the factory brake controller worked fine.
But be forewarned the factory brake controller does work, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

Just take your time in an empty parking lot once you get the trailer and trailer brakes hooked up and play with the brake gain and see what feels best to you. Your truck should tow that TT like a dream! post some pics up once you get it home!!

Thanks for your input and is nice to know that there’s a good chance that the factory brake controller will do its job, I did go ahead and order a Tekonsha P3 controller, plug and play wiring harness and dash mount kit just in case I need it down the road. Heading out first thing tomorrow morning to go pick it up and will post an update with the trailer brake controller and some pictures too!

Haha! Thanks man! @ColoradoTJ We found a great deal and couldn’t pass it up. Going to take our camping and traveling adventures to a whole new level! I have a Husky Centerline TS 8000# WDH that I will be installing on it once it gets here. Unfortunately UPS lost it while shipping it somewhere between Salt Lake City and Denver... it was supposed to be here yesterday and never showed up so I called UPS this morning and they have no idea where it’s at. I will be using just a standard 2” drop hitch now for this maiden voyage it looks like so hopefully the winds won’t be too bad coming back through Wyoming on I-80!

I have a WDH sitting on my garage floor if you want to drop down to Monument.

at some point there was a software update for the controller....might be worth calling toyota and seeing if yours needs it.

This is probably worth doing also! My 2018 vs my 2017 the factory brake controllers seem to operate differently. The 2018 works much better then the 2017 did so it’s possible the 18 had the software upgrade and the 17 did not. After recently pulling my TT with the 18 for the first time I had the gain set to 6/7 vs 9 on the 17 and at 6/7 you could feel the trailer brakes kicking in and it seemed to work correctly.

Very nice of you to offer that up! If I had more time I would definitely take you up on that! Still have a good amount of stuff to get ready do before the end of the day. Thursday looks pretty good for travel with 5-10 mph winds only fingers crossed!

Picked up the White Hawk 24MBH this afternoon and all is good! Factory trailer brake controller seems to be working just fine at 7/8 gain and tows surprising stable so far without the wdh. Got camp set up and now time to grill some burgers and enjoy a cold beer!

Factory Brake controller worked good! I don’t really have anything else to compare it to as I never hooked up the Tekonsha P3 that I bought as a back up but I had it set at 8.5 the majority of the time during the trip back and never felt the need to use the controller manually to slow us down or that I didn’t have enough stopping power.
