I will join in recommending the Fort Knox and V-Line safes with the Simplex locks. I have owned multiple touchpad and biometric electronic safes over the decades and every one has failed to work at least once. The vast majority of these failures were due to battery drain and the secondary access got me in eventually. The problem is with the "eventually" part of that statement. A simplex lock has never failed me, can be accessed in complete darkness, and it is hard to replicate the code even if someone is looking at me access it (the key here is you can use two buttons at the same time as part of the combination).

I got a stack on safe similar to what's in post #2 . I understand your concerns with the small kids but aside from educating them the safe has a few features that help too. Once the code is incorrectly entered it times out for minute, if it's inputted incorrectly again it will time out for 5 minutes, after a third failed attempt it times out for an hour. Maybe that will give you a little peace of mind. The key will always override everything so just make sure those are on you or secured at all times.

I have the Vaultek MX WiFi. While it is not cheap, it is a very very high quality product. The lighting is phenomenal, and the keypad lights up. The biometric portion of it works very well so far, but I am leary of it so it is nice having the keypad. I really have no issues with their bio metric system. If I had to do it again, I would definitely buy another one. I am looking at the Vaultek long gun safe but they are a lot smaller than others for their price.

It also has an "Oh Crap" button. It is a little button that you can mount in a hidden spot. Tap the button and the safe opens.

I am going to order another small Vaultek safe for travel. Probably the Lifepod.

Vaultek is a very high high quality product and you can not go wrong, but a little higher priced.

I personally have a Vaultek Slider. While looking for a safe I ended up going on You tube and seeing how easy it is to break into 90% of these pistol safes. Crazy easy. Well last week a friend asked me if I could get into his safe as the combo was messed up and he lost the key. It has a barrel key lock. I got into the safe inside of 3 minuted using a plastic drywall screw insert. He was a little stunned and is now looking for a better safe.
