I have a 2014 4.6 that I got about a month ago. On acceleration, it seems like the fan clutch is excessively noisy and never turns off. It’s like a loud wind/whistle.

It’s not the alternator whine, but more like really loud wind. Don’t know if that makes sense or not.

Is my diagnosis that the fan clutch is bad something that it likely is?
And if so, is this something that I can replace myself? I’ve never done vehicle maintenance other than oil changes. Wasn’t sure how complicated this would be. I assume not. Forgive my ignorance though.

EDIT: Below is a recording of the noise I’m talking about

It’s hard to tell from a video, but it does sound like the fan clutch is staying engaged. You should hear a roar of the fan on start up, and it fade out in 10-15 seconds. If it doesn’t fade out, that confirms it IMHO.

Aisin part number FCT087 is what I’d recommend. 4 nuts hold it to the hub, and 4 hold the fan blade to it. Pretty easy.

Nope. Just 10 and/or 12 mm sockets / wrenches. Going off memory.

Great! I'll give that a try and update here if that fixed the problem.

Sounds normal. I could hear it disengage a moment after you punched it.

But that is the only time I can get it to turn off. Anytime after that, it doesn't make that noise once I floor it again, until the next time I get in the car.

Under normal driver circumstances, the fan never turns off. You hear that whine at all speeds and RPMs until you really floor it like I did in the video. Then after that, for the rest of the drive in the car that day, it remains completely silent and normal, no matter how I drive. To me that seems strange and I have never had any other vehicle act that way.

Ahhhhh.....I agree, that does sound out of the ordinary. Please let us know if it is indeed a faulty fan clutch if you decide to change it out.

Will do. Am ordering the part this weekend and will probably make the swap next week. Will update then. Thank you for your input!

Big news! Finally got around to installing the new fan clutch and it seems to have fixed the roar! Not a bad install at all. Took me about an hour and a half having not done hardly anything to a vehicle other than oil before. Didn’t realize how much radiator fluid was going to come out when disconnecting the hose, and I lost a little bit.

Thank you guys for the input and part numbers! I’ve attached a few photos of the old one compared to new one I installed. Got the part for $100 on Amazon and so I’m a happy camper when repairs don’t cost hundreds of dollars and am able to do it myself.

    Thanks everyone again!

Wow, I don't seem to hear of those going bad very often. I'm glad that it was easy and straightforward. Well done.

Yup not bad at all. Especially thanks to this guy on YouTube who paved the path before me (if you’re a Tundras.com member, thank you!) This forum is a wealth of information and it’s honestly one of the many reasons why I love being a Toyota owner now. Makes things like this easier to deal with for non-mechanically inclined lawyers like myself lol.
