This is one of those questions I’ve always had but never asked anyone in Law Enforcement. Hope it’s ok to post it here.

On reality TV shows, you sometimes see an officer contacting another agency by phone. You see something like “Hi this is is John Smith from XYZ Service. I’m trying to find out some info about...”.

I have to think that there must be some sort of identity check that happens beyond taking the callers word. How does that usually work? How does one officer validate that another officer is actually who they say they are over the phone?

If this is an inappropriate topic or secret info, mods feel free to delete. I’m honestly just curious.

    Thanks!

TV is awesome isn't it! Verify by badge number and name with the calling officers agency.

Ok - so basically they call and confirm the identity. Simple but works. Thanks!

Basically dispatch can call and patch it,
Or u just call and ID yourself over the phone. If person wants, they can call Pd back to confirm and have it patched To them, or they just let it roll. Also, most agencies can pull CR’s from others to dig up info if needed.
