rear differential noise ...?

took a while to find where the noise was coming from , had to get it up on a lift to do so,
it has no leaks, fluid was changed a year ago, I was wondering if any one had a similar problem ? it doesn't seem to be getting any louder. but I don't want to make it any worse !
one mechanic seems to think it shouldn't be a problem if it doesn't get any louder , going to have my mech. check it out .... just wondering if any knows if this is common in 2005 tundras

Correct oil was used.in the change?

And has the ujoints been greased?

yes it does have an LSD,and had the correct oil changed out last summer,and as far as I know no U joint issue

 

Did it the oil get lSD additive or friction Modifier? If not that's your noise....

 

I found you have to get a very qualified check from a the dealer and not just any dealer a good one. The rear wheel bearing is a common replacement on these tundras.Its a very complicated and costly fix .But less than differential parts. The key is the diagnosis has to be correct. And they have to be very good at the replacement. I spent 3k at a bad dealership in El Paso Texas on a bad diagnosis saying it was a differential part after a mth and 3k they let me have it back still had a loud grinding sound.. I could not even get a reply from anyone in the company there. I took it to a good dealer in El Cajon San Diego Ca. they instantly found it was a rear bearing 1.7k

 

A lot of times, the wrong lube is installed in these rears....mine had just been serviced by a 'pro' when I bought it....with a chattering rear end. I drained the oil, installed NON synthetic Valvoline 75/90 LSD gear oil, added a tube of friction modifier for good measure, and problem solved. Rear wheel bearings on these trucks are not complex at all....the axle needs to be pulled, and the old bearing pressed off and a new one pressed on. A good quality bearing can cost, but nowhere near what the above post states....shop around, guys, and educate yourselves with on-line or factory repair manuals.
