i put my truck into 4wd and it clicks in just fine, the 4HI lights up on the dash, everything seems fine but after a few seconds something locks up i guess and eventually (while i'm not touching anything) the truck will stop. if i press the gas it'll start jumping forward and squeal the front tires. I thought it might be something wrong with the CV axles, but those are spinning still when in 2wd and nothing gets locked up in 2wd. which makes me think its something wrong in the front diff, but i'm really hoping that's not the case.

Don't use 4WD in high traction situations.

Are you turning when this happens?

If not, did you just get this truck? Possible mismatched diff gear ratios? Or mismatched tires?

Yeah, what they said. Get on some dirt or gravel and try it. And say hi to Garfield for me.

SON OF A..... @landphil thank you. i DO have mismatched tires. i put together a bigger set of tires for the truck, but they wont fit up front without spacers so i am waiting on spacers to ship. i already put them on in the back because i needed a load range E tire to tow a dump trailer. so the ones in the rear are 285/70/17, and the front tires are 265/70/16. thats a 2.7" difference in diameter. no wonder it was locking up on me.
man im an idiot. thank you everybody.

If your ABS is acting weird you can probably figure out why as well. ;)
