My digital license plates are due to be delivered today via FedEx! I will be posting photos and reviews of my experience and answering any questions in this thread as I’m sure there’s a few of you out there that are curious.

We specifically got these plates to simplify things with the DMV (we have a unique situation that makes renewing registration a hassle) and for mileage tracking for business expense tracking. And as an added bonus digital marketing and advertising and gps location tracking for insurance.

So far our experience has been positive and customer service has been helpful and knowledgeable.

We now just need to set up an appointment for installation.

    Photos coming soon...

The way California is going, I wouldn't want to volunteer any information. Probably start getting traffic tickets for stop signs, and penalties for accelerating too fast.

    Some stuff
subscription fee + state registration + giving access to all that extra info? hard no.

sorry, you're not unique. CA dmv is a hassle for everyone. there was a reason i always went to the local AAA office for renewals.

CA & AZ now, soon to be all the left coast, then spreading across the plains.....track your every movement, tax by the mile, regardless of what state your registered in, so on a coast to coast trip, you get a bill from every state you go through, cross reference your license to carry, and everything else in your data base, etc, etc. In short, fear not, big brother is watching you. Honestly cannot think of a single good thing about this.

They're part of a subscription service. They run 16.95 or 19.95 a month with a 36 month contract.
    https://www.reviver.com/

I wouldn't want any based on what Eriscopa mentions and I did verify some serious privacy intrusion.
BTW, what's to keep some punks from busting them up?

Here it is. Showed up with license number already uploaded.

it looks a little nicer in person than I was expecting. Installed the app on my phone and made two immediate observations:

    1. Uploading personal images seems to be disabled at this time. We were looking forward to this for business advertising while the vehicle is parked. I’m going to contact Reviver to find out more.

    2. You can upload custom messages to the plate, which is cool but there doesn’t appear to be a way to input it directly via the app. There are plenty to choose from and lots of personal business and cusum messages so I’m assuming you can contact Reviver to request a custom saying uploaded for approval first.

The LTE radio doesn’t appear to be on all the time. It “phones home” periodically for push updates. You can force a connection manually by pressing the button on the plate and rebooting the hardware.

Just need to schedule the install now.

Actually, the vehicle isn’t registered to my physical address and is being leased through a third party so I can’t register or renew personally even though it’s my responsibility. Now I can handle it all through Reviver (much like AAA) and it updates immediately without having to go through the extra hassle on top of the normal DMV headaches.

I’ve lived in uite a few states through the US and I have to say that CA is the most lenient on speeding a moving violations than anywhere else I have lived.

However parking and Redlight cameras are very prevalent and expensive.

Looking forward to the possibility of parking permits “commercial for this truck” being much more accurate and streamlined.

Also I forgot to mention this is a commercial vehicle and I want it tracked. Lots of stolen plates and vehicles here in the city. They already scan and record plates so privacy “at least when conserning vehicles” is already gone.

I very likely would NOT get this on a personal vehicle.

Well, after about a month sitting on my shelf I finally got it installed. So far works as advertised, except custom features aren’t very customizable and/or are disabled right now. Trip telemetry works great. Will have to wait till January to see how DMV updates go. Verdict, meh. Neither impressed or disappointed.

Cool idea but I'll stick with the old metal plates as long as my DOL allows us.

That's what I said. When I lived in CA, I even had my renewal tabs stolen. After than I always cut small slits in them with a razor to prevent it from ever happening again.

Renewals are as easy as walking in to a grocery store no more AAA needed.

It's even easier here in WA. I just do on online and tabs are mailed in a few days.

Everyone that registered out of state are now going to have to take multiple long vacations. California is going to track said vehicles to get their $$$$$$$$$

Definitely not getting that shit. They cost about a thousand bucks and seem like nothing but trouble. I'm cool with the tin plates.

nah. Hard pass. Reminds me of that Seaquest DSV episode where the captain is riding around on his motorcycle then a voice tells him that credits have been deducted from his bank account for excessive speed.

I will acknowledge an issue with fully electric vehicles though. Since the road maintenance funds are collected from the sale of motor vehicle fuels, EV owners aren't paying into that. They are only paying into the grid taxes yet are utilizing the public roads. This could be a solution to that conundrum, but this is still double taxation on EV users. One could also argue that EV drivers are utilizing 2 publicly controlled and maintained systems. ICE drivers use private infrastructure to fill up while utilizing public infrastructure for transportation. Now, doing away with the fuel tax all together and migrating EVERYONE to a pay-by-use system would alleviate this issue. EV drivers would pay grid usage tax while ICE drivers would still pay sales tax. UGH... time to turn off my accounting brain.
