Timing Belt Question about TDC on 2005 DC

    Hey guys,

    I am about to do my timing belt job tomorrow and have done a lot of research, this forum has been really helpful. The last thing I'm wondering about involves a discrepancy in the video I have watched by OTRAMM on doing the job and the Haynes Repair Manual that I'll be using to do the job.

    I am attaching pictures of what I am talking about. The Haynes manual tells me in Step 19a that for my 2005, before removing the belt and after taking belt to timing mark position, to turn the crankshaft 50 degrees clockwise from TDC. This is also done by the guy in the OTRAMM video. I understand this portion.

    However, in Step 35 of the Haynes manual Installation section, it seems like it is saying to return the crankshaft back 50 degrees toward TDC, but before I put the belt on the engine. It is my understanding that moving the crankshaft without the belt will not move the cams and they will not be in sync. The guy in the OTRAMM video does not do what is stated here by Haynes, instead he just goes ahead and puts the belt on with the corresponding marks all lining up to their respective positions.     My question is does anyone know why the Haynes manual would recommend me to return the crank back 50 degrees before installing the belt? And am I overthinking the situation and should just do what OTRAMM does and install the belt and be sure the marks line up, then install the crank pulley and turn the engine two revolutions through and check that it all marks up at TDC?

    Any perspective here would be helpful. I have done my due diligence and am excited to tackle the job myself but want to be certain I am doing everything correctly in order to not damage the truck. Thanks for all of the help so far.

    When I did mine I just used the instructions that came with the Asin kit and a you tube video...dont remember anything about rotating 50 degrees? Once you have all the marks lined up and the belt off dont move anything until the new one is on then rotate back around to TDC and check everything. Done :) well, except for all the crap you have to reinstall....lol

    I could not find a direct answer to the reasoning but I can only assume it involves the VVTi. While doing the timing belt job I went by the OTRAMM video for the belt install, which was pretty close to the factory service manual. But I did not turn the crank back 50 degrees while the belt was off, as instructed by the Haynes manual. Instead I kept the crank and both cams where they were when I removed the belt after turning clockwise 50 degrees as instructed, and then just installed the belt and aligned with the timing marks. Everything worked out by doing it that way.

    The only thing I could come up with for the 50 degree change as opposed to earlier models was that perhaps TDC on the VVTi models did not leave enough space to guarantee no piston to valve encounter in case of cam slippage and that turning 50 degrees provided the room needed inside of the engine. But I do not honestly have a firm grasp of the system involving the pistons and valves so can't be sure at all.

    Going by the Toyota service manual and OTRAMM video worked perfectly however.
