Long story short, I’ve had a few pros look at it and basically tell me it’s not worth saving.

    thoughts?
Any idea how to get these scratches out from the previous owner?

    Sure is.

They were saying that the paint is old and too thin. Then another guy quoted $1,200 to do it.

I only spent $5,000 on the truck soooooo, looking for the cheaper option.

    Some stuff
you could probably get most of that out of there. not all of it. but most. i pulled some severe pin striping off my fj.

i'd make a pass with some adam's compound. follow it with the polish. finish with sealant. compound/polish combo kit here.

I follow a lot of the above advice. I would order the griots g9 with some pads compound and polish and do it yourself to save some cash. It will not be close to perfect but will look a lot better. Vinyl wrap is going to take a ton of prep to look perfect. Wrap vinyl is not forgiving at all so you will see any imperfections. The pic is a sample piece on my fj trying to cover up rock chips. I spent two days sanding and prep and you can still see some imperfections. 70541C4B-4DF9-44B4-A85C-1E4FB55D7E75.jpg

A lot of that will come out with a 2 step correction. It could be possible you could also wet sand some spots but most of that looks like trail pinstripes that will buff out. You could spend 300 ish on products, polish, and a DA with pads and DIY

I hope the guy who quoted you 1200 told you he could only improve it and not make it perfect. Some of those scratches are too deep to fix. If it were my truck, I'd be looking for estimates for a wrap. A respray would be pretty costly I'd think. For the record....if you were in NJ....I'd take a crack at it. I'd love to see how much I could improve it

The good thing is if you buy the tools (Polishers, pads, etc.), the second time you have to do it will cost you next to nothing.

Just be careful not to go all the way through the clear coat. Have seen alot of DIYers get too aggressive and regret it later either in looks or $$.

That kit looks good. I have some decent striping on my black truck.

I was considering this kit: https://www.griotsgarage.com/product/g9+orbital+correct+protect+kit.do?sortby=ourPicks&from=fn

I don't have a machine, so that's really appealing. I'm curious how deep your stripes were.
