TLDR: After unlocking my truck with a key, the alarm went off. Why?

    Hi all,

I tried searching the threads before posting, but did not see this immediately, so....

I received about 8 keys (various shapes and sizes) and one 2 button key fob from the dealer yesterday.

The top button on the fob locks and unlocks the truck, not sure yet what the bottom button does.

I locked the truck last night with the fob, and went out this morning with a set of the keys to unlock the truck.

The truck unlocked fine, but when I opened the door, the alarm went off.

The door I unlocked was the passenger door.

Personally, I hate car alarms so I am fine with disconnecting it, but was wondering why the alarm went off.

Just FYI, but I have very limited experience working on vehicles (can change a headlight or oil just fine).

    Thanks so much!

Your alarm system is armed. Using the key to unlock your truck will not disarm it. Use the FOB to disarm the alarm system.

More then likely it’s a setting in a aftermarket alarm. Set to arm always unless unlocked with fob, I’d just rip it out. Look on the driver side kick panel and under the dash where the steering wheel is. Usually they’re All connected to factory wires and you can pull them out and then there’s two that are butt connected inline with ignition wires and cut them and reconnect the factory wires together and then you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

I am not sure this is an aftermarket alarm. Here is a picture of the FOB that locks/unlocks the car, and apparently sets the alarm.

Is there an alarm button on the other side? My 4runner fob has the red alarm button on the back and sometimes I'd hit that button at the same time I pressed unlock

There are no buttons on the other side of the FOB. Thanks.

If the decision is between (1) having an alarm, or (2) unlocking the door with a key...it's a no-brainer for me: Alarm. I waited long enough for remote unlocking, and I'm going to use that fob every chance I get. :D

I have worked as a tech for Toyota for 10 years and never seen that. And I agree it’s nice to have a fob to lock and unlock a vehicle remotely but on the otherside I’ve seen a lot of alarms bug out or cause other problems like no start or drain battery power or shit like you’re experiencing. So maybe maybe that fob is a fancy alarm that has a Toyota emblem on it so the dealer can pass it off as factory. OR it is factory and I’ve just never seen it before. I’m leaning towards aftermarket.

That’s the fob for dealer installed alarms...
It’s Toyota product. But installed after the fact. I think it was rs3200

This is correct, and unlocking the door manually (with key) with the Alarm active will trigger the alarm to go off.

There should be a red button/light on the driver's side that can disable the alarm ifyif don't like it.
