Well, at least you hope - what with everything that's going on, who knows how long or if they'll delay stuff.

With that said, I believe he'd go to FLW for basic, then off to JBSA (Joint Base San Antonio) for combat medic school.

    Team Subs teammates,

Fifty-seven years ago today, on April 10, 1963, while engaged in a deep test dive, USS THRESHER (SSN 593) was lost at sea claiming the lives of all 129 Officers, crew, and multiple civilians on board the nuclear-powered submarine 300 miles off the coast of New England.

The Thresher was launched on July 9, 1960, from Portsmouth Naval Yard in New Hampshire. Built with new technology, it was the first submarine assembled as part of a new class that could run more quietly and dive deeper than any that came before.

On April 10, 1963, at just before 8 a.m., the Thresher was conducting drills off the coast of Cape Cod. At 9:13 a.m., the USS Skylark, another ship participating in the drills, received a communication from the Thresher that the sub was experiencing minor problems.

Sixteen officers, 96 sailors and 17 civilians were on board. All those lost are listed in the attached… Lest we forget their names.

On April 12, President John F. Kennedy ordered that flags across the country be flown at half-staff to commemorate the lives lost in this disaster. The subsequent investigation revealed that a leak in a silver-brazed joint in the engine room had caused a short circuit in critical electrical systems. The problems quickly spread, making the equipment needed to bring the Thresher to the surface inoperable.

From this tragic event the Submarine Safety (SUBSAFE) Program was established. Our outstanding submarine safety record since the loss of USS THRESHER is a direct result of rigorous compliance with the technical and administrative requirements of the SUBSAFE Program. It is the core of who we are as Submariners.

The culture of the SUBSAFE Program needs to be continually reinforced at all levels of our community. The ability of our submarines to continue to operate successfully and return home depends on the vigilance and integrity of each one of us who works in the community.

Our challenge and responsibility today, is to avoid acting from a position of ignorance, arrogance, complacency, and denial. We must continue to maintain our vigilance, intensity, and integrity in all matters involving the SUBSAFE Program. The supreme sacrifice of those lost with USS THRESHER can be best remembered by never letting it happen again.

Please take a moment today to remember the crew, the civilians, and the families and friends of those lost on the USS THRESHER.

Lest we forget all we’ve learned.

All those angry swans that sit at the end of all the submarines at Submarine Base New London are said to be the souls of the Thresher crew. Mean little bastards they are.

You have my respect. My father was a Vietnam War vet as well. Hopefully you're not dealing with Agent Orange exposure...my Dad got hit by it and he succumbed to his battle with brain/stomach/lung cancer in January of 2019.

7 1/2 Active Duty Air Force as a Civil Engineer doing HVAC/R then 13 more in the Phoenix Air National Guard doing same job. Got out working for a city after Active Duty as HVAC Tradesman taking care of city police stations and fire stations. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Great life been blessed.

20+ years USAF medical service, as an Operating Room & Trauma Nurse. Stationed in 5 different bases/posts, with 3 tours in Afghanistan and response to NYC for 9/11.
30+ years as an RN total, including time in Critical Care, OR & Trauma.

We should add a "radio button" on the front of the website for Registered & Licensed Practical Nurses. There are many who are ER, Field Response, or Flight Nurses...in most cases these "count" as First Responders.

RETIRED now, but still a practicing RN.

Married a nurse practitioner who is in the Navy Reserve (23 yrs). She just got back from being deployed to the Javitz Center in New York. She was dealing with the worst COVID outbreak in the country. Fully 1/3 of all COVID deaths have been in NYC!
