My father in law has our old Sequoia (2012). The lift gate isn’t opening and closing with the fob or dash button most of the time. It does work occasionally. The latch disengages, but it won’t go up or down. Has anyone run into this before?
I’m guessing it’s the motor wearing out, but just wanted to see if anyone has experienced this before with a Sequoia, 4Runner, Highlander, etc. and had a solution.

Sometimes the gas struts get worn enough not to be able to start the process of opening. Same thing Happened on the 4runner we bought for my daughter. I wold replace them and see if that fixes your problem. They’re relatively inexpensive

Would that keep them from going down though?

No sweat. I believe there’s a reset procedure. I’ll try that and see if it makes a difference.

I would start with new struts (or swap with your wife's to rule it out) bc the gate does all sorts of funny things when it doesn't complete it's motion when you hit the key or button. New struts and reset procedure should get it working correctly.....hopefully. Good luck man!

I think mine does something similar. Once in a while when I try to open it with the remote, the liftgate would open but doesn't go up. I'd have to press the remote a second time for it to actually open up. Never really thought it would be an issue with a strut or the motor since it seems to close fine. Would be interesting to see what you find.

May be a while before I get around to it. They’re taking it to Tennessee for a week. I’ll let everyone know.

Had an '08. The back hatch was the most problematic part of the vehicle. Sometimes it would work electronically, sometimes not. I think eventually we just used it manual, and yes the struts lost their juice a bit. Also, the window at one point went down but would not go up -- found out the mechanisms back there are known to rust out. I had the dealer pull the window back up and bolt it in rather than paying for the fix. Bottom line: Expect such issues! They are reported all over....

    I’m sorry you’re experiencing issues

Our 2008 Sequoia Limited has 227,000 trouble free miles

i do regularly lube the lift gate motor gears and silicone the tracks a few times a year though

This Sequoia has well over 200,000 miles on it and this is literally the first malfunction of any kind. It’s not even a major issue. Great vehicles.

I haven't had any issues with mine other than it needed cleaning after it got mud in the tracks. I don't have an electric open/close on mine though. Gotta go old school. :)
I'm wondering if anyone has figured out a way to open a 2nd gen rear hatch from the inside?

I have a 2023 sequoia with 4500 miles, has not even had a oil change yet. The lift gate will open automatically however it will not close unless you close if physically. When you push the button to close it will give two beeps and that's is all it does. It seem to be an issue the happens either after a rain or after the vehicle has been washed. Is anyone else having this issue.

Sounds like you accidentally pushed the button on the dash. On mine, it’s to the left of the steering wheel.
