Help with a bad neighbor

Fix your dogs barking and the situation will deescalate and you have no problems.

 

Not saying this is your situation but a lot of issues can be solved easily when you remove egos..

 

I don’t believe in trying to train a dog to not bark at all with collars etc. It’s inhumane and naive to think a dog should NEVER bark. My dogs will bark to signal danger or someone is at the house which is why a dog should bark. If some stranger is on my property - you’re damn right I want my dog to bark, until that stranger is identified.

Uncontrolled barking is indeed a nuisance and should be corrected. In my case my dogs were not barking incessantly or uncontrolled - if and when they do they are corrected or put inside, period.

 

Fact is dogs need training if they're to live in a neighborhood with other dogs, sounds, people. I much prefer the country as to avoid situations like this. One person's tolerance won't be the same as yours or others.

 

I totally get both sides, I’m a dog lover myself, but really really do not like it when dog owners allow their dogs to bark unnecessarily. The dog who just barks at the moon is really frustrating to listen to. So even though your neighbor is a knucklehead for calling the cops, which is lame in itself because being retired from that occupation their are better things for our officers to be doing, It is your responsibility to train, and keep the dogs quiet. Maybe find a farm around you where the dogs can be adopted and bark their hearts out.

We have noise laws here that including barking dogs and I am well within the bounds of the law. And I keep it so the dogs are not a nuisance. I have a coward of a neighbor that resorts to fireworks and air horns because he doesn’t have the cojones to talk to me like a man. I have no problems addressing issues with people reasonably whether it be a mistake on a bill or someone screwed up my order at the drive thru (I always go back!). I wanted to talk to the guy but my wife suggested no thinking he’s a coward and would probably call the cops and say I was threatening him (he’s a male Karen).

 

I've been on both sides of this, I've lived next to noisy dogs and jerk neighbors. If your dogs bark when you're home, I can guarantee they bark 100x more when you're gone. That's what dogs do. And your neighbor should have talked to you instead of starting a fireworks show. Seems like both of you aren't happy and could have avoided it by having a beer with each other

 

Probably right - but I work from home and my dogs are never left outside When we’re not home.

I had a bad neighbor with dogs just like this. You are responsible for stopping them and there is no excuse, neighbor or otherwise. He is reacting to your dogs who have started this situation. He probably had a nice peaceful area before the dogs came.
I would take a long hard retrospective. The barking laws are there for a reason. Sounds like he’s handling it wrong but that doesn’t excuse you. Training, bark collar, or a privacy fence can help.
He just wants to enjoy his backyard without the nuisance of hearing your dogs bark. A very very reasonable request.
If I were him I would be recording as well as reporting you to animal control.

 

Dogs are a luxury, not a right.
Having a nuisance free living area is a right not a luxury. Good luck.

 

He beat you to it, multiple times in fact, and multiple times the authorities told us we were fine and not violating any laws. Animal control reminded us to keep the dogs in check and that’s exactly what we’re doing. Thanks for the viewpoint and perspective.
