Got a speeding ticket in VA last week. Had to head to CT from Knoxville and got pulled over in Washington Co - 1/2 hour north of Bristol. Of course, it was the Friday before Memorial Day weekend and there were a million cops out, so I should have been more careful, but I had just gotten back on the highway after getting gas and was on a conference call for work. I never saw him and was hit by laser. Ticketed for 86 in a 70, which is considered reckless driving in VA and have to go to court. Was thinking about hiring a lawyer so I don't have to drive 3 hours to go. Anyone have any recommendations for a lawyer in that area of the state?

I live in Mass and had the same thing happen. I forget If it was North Carolina or Virginia and this was a year ago. Same deal though I was going 15 miles over and it wasn’t a ticket I could pay. Mandatory court case and I had to go there on July 5th or a lawyer could represent me and I got the ticket on Memorial Day weekend as well. It turns out to be such a scam money maker. I googled lawyers in that neck of the woods right off the bat. Turns out the lawyer made me pay his small fine which was like $200, he then told me to send my driving record and proof that I took a safe driving class. I took the class for free at AAA. He also told me that he would consider it a faulty speedometer in my truck which I thought was odd because my truck was relatively new, whatever...anyways for about $500 I paid the faulty speedometer ticket, court fees and his fee with no out of state surcharge. The funny thing is about a week after I got the ticket I got letters from every lawyer in the county wanting to represent me. It was actually getting comical how many letters I got but it did turn out to be a small money maker for that state and I won’t speed in that state ever again because of the hastle I

I actually just got my first letter from an attorney today. I googled and found a million attorneys from VA advertising reckless driving. Thanks for the response.

The 2x I got pulled over, all I had to do was to go to any auto shop to get proof that 'my speedometer reading was faulty.' LOL

Got a funny story involving a friend of mine and Virginia. Before I begin though 45 states share driving records with each other. My friend lived in a state that doesn't. He was driving on I-81 through Virginia I believe near Staunton right past the I-64 exit. He was doing about 80ish got a speeding ticket and a reckless charge. He never took care of it because he thought he could get away with it because he was out of state. Now funny thing is that is not entirely true he just happens to live in one of the 5 states that does not share with the others. He lives in Georgia. That being said 10 years later he still has his license but probably has some sort of warrant out on him for not appearing in court. He told me he was pulled over a couple of times since then one with a warning and one a citations for a doing a rolling stop at a stop sign but they never mentioned to him about anything that happened in VA. What makes it funny is if he heads up north to visit family and friends he drives 50-100ish extra miles to avoid driving through Virginia or has someone drive him through it lol. I tease him from time to time and call him Fugitive Ted. EDIT: I cannot exactly remember if it was a reckless charge but this was back in 2009 that it happened to him.

No offense, but not buying into that at all. If the driver's speedo was off at the time of the ticket what does that have to do with a 3rd party after the fact saying it was "off". Judge Judy could even see through that nonsensical excuse...LOL

Hey, I don't buy it either, but that is indeed what we were able to do. Even my 23-year-old military (read: not always exercising the best judgment LOL) self could see through it, but I mean, it was (and may still be) legal, so hey.

In point of fact, though, the one time I did get pulled over (going 57 in a 35), I went before the judge to plead my case. He asked me if I had anything to say or show in support.

I told him that I was indeed probably going that speed, but asked if I could submit a picture for his consideration; he said "Sure." I gave him a pic of a newspaper held next to a 2/3rds obscured speed limit sign. When he asked me what this was, I told him it was the speed-limit sign, obscured by the HUGE bush in front of it.

Case was dismissed immediately...and the bush was cut down the very next morning. LOL

Personally I would get a lawyer. Reckless charges here are very difficult to deal with for multiple reasons. Especially if you live out of state. If they stick they last a long time on your driving record. You should check to see how the charge would transfer to your license in your home state - or if this can even happen.

I got pulled over in nc a few years ago and I won’t forget the trooper literally sounded like boomhower from king of the hill and I honestly could not understand him. Anyway it was like 10 over. Mandatory court appearance. I live in nj. He printed out the court date on a old fax paper with the holes on each side. I ended up paying a lawyer to represent me for like $300 and that included the ticket which he got it down to. Think it was faulty speedometer. I agree. Big scam. But I shouldn’t have sped I suppose

Whether or not you have to attend court in person, I would still get an attorney because of the reckless driving charge. The ramifications of being found guilty could well exceed the legal fees, day of work missed, travel costs, etc. If they can attend the hearing for you, then probably better. For the judge, this is just another day at the office.

There is a lesson here, but it will not help you with history.

    Coming soon.
Had a job opportunity in VA and would not even consider it because of the overzealous traffic policing.

Don't worry. By the end of the week you will have plenty. Depending on your driving record they maybe able to get it reduced to faulty equipment. It will cost you but it beats paying the insurance company for the next 3 years.

I don't know how it is now, but years ago in VA if your speedometer was off, you could get it calibrated. Couldn't be a backyard mechanic, it had to be a certified calibration location. You also had to bring the cal report along with a receipt for fixing it. That would usually get it reduced to defective equipment, not a moving violation, so no points. I don't speed anymore, so I can't say if it works now.

Ditto; I only lived in VA from 1997 - 2003, but it sure worked then. (Full disclosure: I personally had no need to use it, but I went to court to represent one of my junior sailors @ the time, and know tons more who used it.)

I remember doing it once. But I had a POS 70 something Fiat, and the speedometer was wacky.

Don't worry, you'll get tons of lawers harassing you. It sucks, I know. I live in Richmond and got a ticket last year for 87 in a 65. The cop was very cool, though, and didn't make it reckless. He could've thrown me in jail. Gotta watch VA Troopers. They're sneaky as hell. Best of luck with the court case.

Recalibrate/test the speedo. Have certificate. Let the Esquire handle the Judge in a backroom pow wow on their turf. They win you lose. You’ll lose more if you don’t listen.

I forgot who I used years ago but most traffic lawyers would handle cases throughout the state. He may have been based out of Richmond. Recently the law changed where any speed in excess of 85 is reckless driving, use to be any speed over 80 is. I got mine dismissed after they saw my clean driving record and had to take a online defensive driving course.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. To answer the questions, I was in Washington County. I was charged with reckless driving. I have 2018 Tundra and have noticed a 1 mph difference between Waze and the speedo, so I'm curious if the speedo is off even if it doesn't help the cause any.

So far I've received info from three different lawyers in the mail and expect more to follow. Sounds like they cover most counties. The question for you guys is does anyone have a recommended one they've actually used? Otherwise it'll be somewhat of a crap shoot. Thanks.

All this reminds me of my experience in NC with a ticket. As one may have guessed, I got it going a whopping *2* miles over the speed limit in Mecklenburg County. The officer tried to tell me that I *HAD* to show up; I told him "I can certainly try, but my ship will be out at sea during that time, and I am pretty sure they're not going to change plans so I can show up in court." He finally, reluctantly told me that I could send a check to such-and-such location.

Fast forward 2 months....I worked in the combat systems department. The Commo (communications officer) called me to his office, which is never good...and asked me why there was a warrant out for my arrest in NC.:eek: Obviously I was mortified. I told him what had happened...and once he called he determined that they never got a check. *facepalm*

Given the situation, my supervisors were a bit less inclined to believe me...and I finally lost it and told me "Dammit, then send me there and I'll go to jail but I will NOT have my integrity questioned due to a mistake!" I was not one to lose my cool, especially around superiors, so that made them take pause. They asked what my plan was; I asked if I could have a few hours to research what happened.

First place I went was the mail room on the USS Enterprise and ask if I could help them look for my letter. They did not want to but the commo intervened.

Turns out *THEY* accidentally dropped my check - stamped - between the desk. I picked it up and showed it to the commo/my chief. Commo said "OK, PO2, we got it from here."

Mecklenburg County did *NOT* want to just accept payment. They wanted a body. LOL The commo essentially had to tell them "Look - you're a county government. We represent the USS Enterprise and the United States Navy. Good story! I received on for doing 60 in a 55 on route 95 in RI right over the boarder about 30 years ago. I had gotten a speeding ticket on the way to URI in Old Saybrook, CT to see my girlfriend one weekend and had to go to court, so I figured I was so close I'd go back to see her. Saw the cop about a mile away, watched my speed, was in a suit for being in court for the other speeding ticket and then got pulled over a mile later. I was told I was doing 5 miles over the limit. Couldn't believe it. 25.00 ticket.

UPDATE: Reached out to three lawyers - all had sent me info in the mail. Call several 2-3 times. No response. Did a little researched and found one. I had to send an official drivers record and was told to take a drivers course for 80.00 - 8 hours Zoom class on a Saturday!!!! They said if I have a clean record (I do), they should be able to reduce it down to a 79 in a 70, which is just a speeding ticket. Fines and court fees are expect to be 200.00+

Most of these lawyers charge a flat fee from 250.00 and to up over 400.00. It's certainly a business that the state, police depts, attorneys and everyone else with affiliate benefit from. Just google "reckless Driving VA" and see how many lawyers you get returned.
