this has more than likely been been discussed but I'm going to pile on. I just put in my JStar LEDs and am very happy with the outcome. Here's the thing, do your best to remove the bulb without taking out the aluminum shield under the cover. If you do bend it or feel you have to remove it, my recommendation is to throw it on the ground and beat it with something solid! I'm a very patient person when it comes to mechanical issues but after 3 attempts I realized there was really no difference with the bezel in or out. You will however may want to apply some quality tape on one side of the cover edge to take up some space ( about .030) as the near silent rattle might wake up the voices

A little of this and a little of that.
I had the same problem with the reflector bowls in my truck as well. Ended taking them out and saving them in case someone in the future wants to put the halogens back in it. I did save the halogens, btw. You're correct in saying that there was minimal/no difference with the reflector bowl in or out.
