i've always believed nasa should be a privately (non-governmental) run company. maybe this is the beginning. pretty cool collaboration between the two. hope all goes well.

 

All based on the weather though.

 

I heard there's a possible storm that might push it back to saturday.

 

First launch from American soil in 9 years, this is pretty huge! They're saying 50% probability of launch today, but still 4 hours out. Super cool to see the US back to launching astronauts, God Speed to them!

 

Yes alot of thunderstorms in the area on and off today. Welcome to sunny Fl during the summer. Did I mention that it is extremely humid today?

i don't know. i'm not sure he would. he was up front and center for most of the space race. he also has been there to see the funding dwindle and the end of the shuttle missions. given his knowledge and his past, i'm sure he totally appreciates what spacex is doing. they've built things that nasa could never have done. there was no box that they had to operate in.

i look at this and see huge similarities to the apollo missions and nasa's heyday. it's been too long. the conversation they just showed between musk and bridestine where they talked about inspiring the next generation was totally on point. what's happening today is going to be a huge leap forward.

i'm sure aldrin is as stoked as a 90 year old man can get right now.

 

I'm also in the "privatize space travel" camp. I believe the government should help fund space travel since it's in the good of all humanity, but private industry will always be able to innovate faster, better and cheaper than the government. The government can supply some cash, but the actual work should be done commercial companies.

 

Bit of a side note, alot of Canuckistanis are having a pretty good chuckle that the astronauts' names are Bob and Doug.

 

Reading his recent messages on social media, he is pretty stoked. He was/is(?) very vocal about the privatization of space. He did state that the governments of the world should be the leaders in space travel in order to keep space in the public domain. He did say these things some years back, so he may have come to grips with the fact that space travel is an industry now.

Many companies have their origins from government start ups. Space X would never be without NASA and NASA would never be without the government. I hope it gets delayed to Saturday, I'm at work...

I don't disagree with you. I've said many times that if you had told us it would be 50 years since we returned to the moon back when we were making moon landings you would have been call nuts.

There’s something really cool about all the buttons and gadgetry on those Apollo rockets, but it’s also neat to see how far technology has come since then.

 

Next launch window is Saturday. That sucks. Not sure why you'd have an instantaneous launch window, usually it's a decent span of time and can wait for the weather to clear.
