I polished my tailgate last weekend and it is perfect with no swirl marks. It is currently dusty and covered in pollen. I'll use this jet black stuff tonight when the sun has gone down and I'll see if I can use it to remove the dust and such and still leave me with no swirls or scratches. This would be a pretty awesome situation if it works.

I tried out the jet black detailer today and I have mixed feelings about it. It did clean my tailgate and the sides immediately adjacent very nicely and they look fantastic now. I didn’t spray it on a scratch to see if it would colour it and help cover it at all (I am guessing that’s why they add the black dye to it) but the stuff I sprayed looks great, and I don’t see any evidence of swirls, I’ll look again tomorrow in different lighting.

Now the questionable part: I sprayed it and thought to myself “hmm that smells like salt and vinegar chips” and I noticed when I sprayed it on my plasti dip bumper that it seemed to peel up an edge of the plasti dip (top picture in the middle too of the passenger side corner) and when I was done and I ran my finger across it (shame on me) it seemed to have lost all of its slickness I put in by polishing and waxing and sealing just a few days ago. I read the back and under the safety section it mentioned that it contains isopropanol-that was the smell that I was picking up.

Did I just detail my tailgate with an IPA wipe?? Wtf!

I just did a quick maintenance wash. I split the truck into 2 sections, the cab, and the box. The cab and front end got rinsed with pressure washer, foam cannon with the hybrid wash and wax (doesn’t foam at all) followed by a rinse and the hybrid ceramic drying aid and wiped dry with my new drying towel. The rear end i “washed” with my black detailer only. The whole truck looks fantastic, but the front does look deeper and better. Tomorrow is supposed to rain so we’ll see how the water repellency works comparing the detailer to the wash and drying aid.

despite the detailer not feeling as slick as the wash/drying aid portion the water repellency seems to be the same. I'm not sure if this is the detailer or the polish and sealer underneath.

Polishes do very little as a water repelllent. There are oils in it which will repel water, but for a very short time. A lot of detailers actually take an extra step of removing them, via a panel prep or ips wipedown, prior to application of a sealant to ensure proper bonding. Don't overthink this..... your truck looks awesome. Your wash/maintenance regimen will change over time as products evolve. My comfort level with my own routine varies....I'm my worst critic....but I stick with it until better products come along and/or someone shows me a better way to do it.
