There is a ticking noise coming from underneath my 05 Tundra when accelerating. If I hit the throttle in neutral there is no ticking noise...it only starts when I reach 2000 rpms. It doesn't sound like a horrible problem its more so annoying. Anyone know what this could possibly be? I don't think it is a loose heat shield. The sound sounds like a piece of tape is stuck in a fan or something.

Get someone to rev it will you are under for inspection. Or, put a brick on the pedal and then crawl under. Make sure you are in park with the e-brake engaged. :D

This would work except the noise only happens when the car is moving. Stationary there is no noise

Well the timing belt, brakes and water pump all have been done within the last 500 miles.

Possible: exhaust (manifold?) leak, lifter tick, low oil level, something stuck on knuckle/brake area rubbing on wheel, rock stuck in tire, pine needles stuck in radiator (hitting fan).

Noises are hard to diagnose over internet.

My wife got a stone stuck in the disk brake shield right after she got a new Honda and I thought something was messed up. Dealer figured it out right away. Made a tick tick tick noise at speed. Easy to check. Good Luck.

The guy I got it off of said its the exhaust manifold and said its normal for these first gens. Hmm...What about the exhaust manifold? Like I need to replace it? I appreciate all of the responses, all possibilities. Taking her into the shop this week. Hopefully they can figure out what it is. Thanks again everyone!!!

it is common to have the exhaust manifold crack. Replace is the only fix.. this is where most people just put headers on, its not the easiest job in the world

Does anyone have any idea how much it is to get a shop to replace? Essentially how much are good headers plus install? Anyone would suggest Dealer or Auto Shop?

I believe typical labor time is 8 hrs. Plus the cost of parts. So your looking at ~1000-1100 at a dealer in labor

Sheesh that sounds like a lot. Well if its cracked I would ideally like to hopefully get it welded or buy a stock manifold as a more cost efficient method if possible. Headers do sound nice though. Even though smog certified ones here in California aren't cheap

i believe headers end up being cheaper. new oem will end up cracking again eventually. others will chime in here though. welding i dont believe lasts. but then again i dont think ive seen anyone weld them

Whether you repair the current manifold, replace with stock, or replace with headers, the manifold has to come off and one has to go back on -- so labor will be the same.

Try either caulking or replacing the steering wheel bushing/donut. The sound travels through it and if its torn badly will quiet things down if replaced. Cheap fix. Assuming the tick really is headers.

Most people report the tick at idle not at 2000 RPM.

At idle it’s completely quiet. Even revving in neutral it’s quiet. The second I am moving it starts. So strange

Before you do anything look underneath the truck where the steering wheel shaft enters the cab and see if your steering shaft seal is ripped. If it is it will make that annoying ticking sound when accelerating. It’s a 20.00 part and an hour labor. The sound is very similar to an exhaust manifold leak

Anything new on this issue? My 04 has something similar, haven't had time to do the normal wheel bearing, brake etc etc test... I did read about the diff losing a pin inside... Been searching for hours but nothing concrete.

Yeah I just saw that thread.... Guess I just have to check everything... Noticed another tundra in a parking lot had the same issue as well... Crazy because I only have 75k miles. No issues driving or going over bumps. Just when I'm in a parking lot going slow... Thanks!!

It's worth mentioning that I only heard the "tick tick tick" at real low speeds too. Once I replaced the steering shaft seal I don't hear that noise anymore.

Interesting, but how about when your window is rolled down?

I heard it with the window down for the first time in a long time recently. Didn't bother me nearly as much as it did before I swapped that seal.

I’m picking up an immaculate 04 sr5 tundra with 84,000 miles on it - actually at the dealer right now about to purchase. Same issue - No whirring/ticking sound at idle or neutral, but as soon as it’s in drive moving, there’s that ticky whirry sound that increases with RPMs coming from the drivers side. Really hyped about this truck but a little worried about the sound - I haven’t driven these though so not sure if it’s normal or not.

I had the same problem, mine was the gasket for the flange between the one manifold and exhaust pipe.

Had same ticking . Exhaust manifold leak. Labor is crazy and my mechanic stated they don’t like doing them because the bolts will sometimes break and it’s a pain in the ass. Dealer literally stated the same. If it’s not causing any harm.....

Steering shaft seal got rid of my tick.

Or... maybe it just prevents me from hearing it. Either way, that’s a win in my book.

If you do find out it’s a manifold take it to a muffler /exhaust shop I have had manifolds and or headers put on for a fraction of that about 150 to 200 a side plus parts and they do them daily so they usually can get them off without breaking anything
