Happy Memorial Day weekend, all. Took my 2000 Access Cab I bought a month ago for it's first long trip, up the challenging tight turns and steep grades of HWY 36 here in NorCal. Truck performed wonderfully on the trip up. On the way down, through the twisty yet fairly level portion of the hwy I developed a high speed vibration I could definitely feel in the drive train, right in the seat of the pants. It was very reminiscent of a similar occurrence I had with two previous vehicles. In this case, it develops at 55mph up to about 70 where it lightens out a bit. It varies in oscillation, and upon braking will intensify, then go away at about 30mph. 30 to 55mph it does not happen. The previous vehicles (one, a '63 Chevy Biscayne, lol) had bad center support bearings. So I climbed under the truck and inspected mine...The driveshaft is sitting out of center, and I can see evidence of the rubber bushing/seal (?) cracking. Pushing up on the driveshaft, it has about 1/8" of play inside the bearing. My question is: Am I on the right track? Thoughts of what else may be happening? I do see that U-Joint seeping, but found no rotational play in the driveshaft as best as I could feel by hand turning it. At the least, I am going to have it replaced, sure can't hurt. Thanks all! Thing is, I can feel the vibration right under the middle of the truck, not on the outside corners. And it had an immediate onset. It's a vibration I've felt in other vehicles I've owned. The sound comes from under the truck as well. I'm just hoping it's not transmission.

I've had the truck a month. It was fully serviced by the dealer prior to purchase, lubed and all fluids fresh. (Let's hope they did those, not just said they did) Honestly, that bearing should not have 1/8" play in it, right?

Thats normal play. I replaced mine after 16 years and it was still in ok shape. It had 1/4” play. The new one has a little less.

1/8” is normal I suppose as the design incorporates rubber meant to flex and give.

It's really loose. Did you notice the way it's sitting...Off center? Thanks!

You should replace it. There is a link somewhere on here to the OEM part. I went through Toy Online Site, but some of the guys found the OEM Center Bearing for half what I paid. There are 2wd and 4wd Bearings so be careful when ordering.

Not sure who found the cheaper bearing? @speedtre @FrenchToasty @FirstGenVol

I’ve been having a similar issue that I’ve been chasing. I’ve replaced u joints, carrier bearing, had my shaft balanced, and it still does it. Look at your front CV axles. Are you lifted at all? They could be causing it as well.

I had a Ford Ranger with an out of balance driveshaft. This does feel a lot like that, but it is intermittent. Feels so much more like the bad carrier bearing I had on the old Biscayne. Thanks!

I'm going to replace it. Hopefully that solves the problem. The rubber looks pretty perished, I imagine it's going to go out eventually, so I'm going to start there. If indeed it's U-Joints or an out of balance driveshaft, that will be next. Sure appreciate the advice everyone! I've found "OEM" spec bearings all over the map. I may be able to get the dealer to do the replacement as I have a warranty.

I posted a link to that thread earlier. I think post #34 in that thread has a good summary.
