so the 1940s era hardware on our front and side doors has finally given out. the deadbolt mechanism has sheared off on the inside so the only way to unlock the front door is from the outside. the doors themselves have warped and are starting to separate at the seams. need some recommendations on what to get for replacement. steel? fiberglass? straight up wood? if i'm just replacing the door, i don't need a prehung, right?

I would not go with a solid wood door again in our climate. My entry door is needing refinished. So I will have to remove door, bar the front entryway, sand the door and refinish with SPAR varnish/urethane.

You have seen my entryway, and that’s gonna suck ass.

One of my carpenters buddies I have said once you remove a door from the frame, it really never goes back on from the original.

I will refinish this door once and then replace the entryway with a more efficient one.

With all the temperature swings and direct sunlight you get up there my money would be on steel.
I've had them all over the years and steel has been the one with the most staying power for me.

I think most exterior doors from Lowes and HD are prehung. You might have to see if you have any local door builders.

I would smart lock it. My kids have issues with locking doors. As of today, if I find a door unlocked, each have to pay me 1.00 and goes up .25 cents every time. This seems to be the only thing that works...taking money out of their accounts.

That’s funny that you think HD is gonna have a front door for a 1940’s house that’s just gonna fit right in there...we owned a house for nearly a decade in whittier, 1896 built, everything was custom, hope you have better luck.

    Thank you.

It wouldn't be my selection in doors though. Not very secure, the wood bows in the winter months, and isn't energy efficient.

What kind of doors do you use in FL?

They are mostly steel here due to hurricanes. There are some that are wood but the humidity wreaks havoc on them.

I have a wood grain fiberglass door. It’s pretty efficient and low maintenance. But I also have a good storm door. Too cold and snowy here during the winter, so a storm door helps keep the wind out.

I'm a remodeling contractor in Atlanta, I would personally go for a fiberglass door, is impact resistant unlike steel doors and a quality fiberglass door has goo insulation. I once saw a carpenter bee going to town on a brand new mahogany door installed on a customers house....bees, sun make me shy away from any wood door, they are beautiful but a maintenance headache.

We use their doors all the time they're top-notch. They're still doors have no wood inside the door once so ever just in the frame and they offer tons of options they will make the outside one color and the inside another color so you don't even have to paint it when it arrives.

Go to Lowe’s to avoid the entry line

Smart lock. All of our locks are Schlage. Proven (based on CIA books I’ve read :spy: ) to be one of the hardest to pick. Our front door is smart locked too. Some, you can also have it autolock based on your preferred time.
