So we have a Samsung 4K system that we bought from a brick and mortar store a couple of years back. A couple of the cameras keep losing signal causing the DVR to beep and it drives us nuts. I haven't tried swapping cameras or anything yet. Anyway, what are you guys using and is capable of reading license plates at 30 to 40 feet? We have a couple of Ring cameras as well but they are good for close ups like near the house itself. Thanks.

I use Nellys Security. You can Google it. They are an online vendor. They have great tech support and have live chat and such to help with your purchase. Most knowledgeable that I have found

I have a Google Nest outdoor camera and it’s been great! Great video quality, wide angle field of view and the Nest service is awesome. No need for DVRs etc.

I’ll probably be buying those myself in the near term. My brother has them on his house — worked well enough to capture a drive-by shooting on his street about a year ago, police were able to identify the car and apprehend the shooter. They have pretty good clarity at all hours of the day. Not the cheapest, but a solid camera from what I’ve seen.

Well I've got Smith and Wesson at home so I don't need to rely on my cameras. :D

Digital Watchdog is good, and for LP you'll need to invest a good grand or more to read them. Special lenses and filters needed and also field of view is small.

Avoid brands manufactured in PRC as they utilize spyware on their devices.

They are not the cheapest indeed - but at least in my experience it’s worked great. I have had some suspicious activity with my neighbors and my Nest camera has helped tremendously. I love it. I had a FedEx package that was supposedly “delivered” and there was no package. My camera did not see any FedEx trucks either during the time that my package was allegedly “delivered”.

    It’s been great

I have two dogs and a plethora of firearms. There is no way someone is getting in my house without me knowing it or getting past my dogs. If somehow they were to get past my dogs I’ll be waiting with plenty of firepower. The cameras are great for times when I’m not home.

The Neat service has been very reliable with near real time alerts about activity around the house.

Ring is having a Memorial Day sale so I’m gonna grab a couple of the spotlight cameras to go along with my ring doorbell. I’m done with all my Arlo stuff. Tons of false alarms and poor video quality. Not to mention that the batteries die very quickly.

I run Blue Iris with 6 4k poe fixed cameras and a 1080p PTZ that has tracking features that follow people as the walk by. It's kinda wild.

I have an Arlo System and been pretty happy with it. Haven’t needed any tech support yet, so cannot comment on that angle. It’s the HD version and the image quality is decent, but not great.

So there are essentially 2 types of Camera Systems out there to choose between.

1-The cheaper all in one systems like everyone here has pretty much mentioned.

    Or

2-The ones that are sold and installed by "Pros" mainly where like most other things Electronic you build a system from a selection of modular Cameras,Lenses and Recorders to get exactly what you might need instead of taking just what might be in the system of the first type.

If you need to reliably read a Cars Plates then you might get lucky with the cheaper system but you can be sure that from a component system you can build a camera to get this done from almost any range or lighting availability.

Like most other things you get what you pay for and there is a reason that a lot of people pay someone else to design and install systems for them too.

I install Ring and Nest every day and try a lot of the all in one boxed systems too trying to see if any really stand out or not and while they can be really effective in both performance and price they rarely stand up performance wise to even a dirt cheap component system which will be able to use many different cameras and/or camera/lens combinations to yield the sort of exact coverage that you might really want and need.

It is hard to beat cheap to a lot of people but if you want better it is easy to get there too.

Another nod also has to go out to WYZE cameras! The WYZE Cam are $25 or @35 each and all include free 2 week Cloud Based Monitoring!

Since many of the cameras sold anywhere all use identical sensors and lenses anyway it is pretty tough to beat the price and performance from a WYZE system especially since once you buy the cameras the Cloud service is essentially free for long enough to be perfect for most folks for your house. You can also add cheap cheap memory storage for continuous local storage in addition to the cloud storage and again for the money these are really an amazing little device.

They also now have Light Bulbs and Door Deadbolts and Sensors that can link with the Cameras to create a pretty robust yet inexpensive Automated Security System that is so easy and cheap to get into that I have been installing the heck out of them and using a bunch myself too.

This is a pretty great time for this sort of thing for sure with many great choices for almost every budget and performance level.

yes, also like to watch myself cook.

That particular camera covers two rear windows and a door that can't be seen as well as the front main hallway..
