Hey guys. I recently bought a boat. When I’m towing (in tow mode) the truck display says no trailer. I also have no brakes coming from the trailer. It’s a 21 foot tandem boat mate trailer. All trailer lights are working. 4E7B0A2E-3344-48FA-B1DE-FF164C410F56.jpg

A lot of boat trailers use a surge brake, which isn't controlled by your trucks controller. If you're not plugged into the big round jack, and only using the 4 pin blade connector then you're not hooked to the trucks controller.

I just read up on your trailer and even though you're plugged into the 7 pin on your model, it states it uses a surge brake as standard equipment. Electric brake is optional. You can tell if it uses a surge brake by looking at it near the tongue.

What he said. If you can back up without locking up the trailer brakes everything is working as it should.

    Sweet boat.

If your surge brake cylinder starts to get noisy check fluid and try bleeding. I had to replace mine. You need to check fluid occasionally. Little rubber plug on cylinder. Do not overfill.

Trailers with surge brakes should also have a special chain that activates the brakes if the trailer comes loose from the hitch. It can be a life saver.

It can also mess things up when your foreman drives off with the truck after unhitching the trailer but before unhooking that little cable...

    Love the boat!

@BoerboelTundra how does the Tundra do while towing the new boat?

I'll be looking at a used 22' Centurion in a few days, I'm wondering what to expect.

@MotoTundra the boat tows great! Electric trailer brakes would be a nice upgrade to have but not necessary. We have a 4 hour drive to the cabin and the truck handles the boat no problem

Yes. And it should be connected to the truck, not the safety chains, lol. I think 90% of them are wrapped up with the safety chain and connected to the chain hooks.
