All parts are Toy quality, or better?

I'm on my way to town right now to get one. I have a tap/die kit, but nothing that large.

Is this the Big gurl special you were referring to?

I know a couple folks have had issues with aftermarket drums. Not sure if any are better than others

I may look into Toy parts considering how important being able to stop is.

    Did some quick Google searches.

Local autozone had all the parts so I will go with them.

Die acquired. Parts acquired. Work tomorrow...

While I was out today I had a "sample" cut of 1/4" tubing to test fit.

    20200517_185210.jpg
New on the left, and old on the right. Obviously the rubber has lost its "bounce back," and is now set on the male fitting size. 20200517_185226.jpg

Any recommendations on anything else I should replace WHEN I get to that job are welcome.

    @Professional Hand Model

    I will peruse momentarily.

    BLECH!
Off topic: went for a walk in the woods today. The trail is paved, (but lots of roots breaking it up-LOL). Went off trail to see what's what 'over there'. 12 pallets! of paver blocks just dropped in the woods. WTH? Hear some rustling under a brush next to me - some black & yellow garden snake heading away. Just can't escape them. On Topic, wonder how many of those pavers the Tundra would handle at a time? They'd make a great parking pad for the RV. Snake can stay though. Blech.

Haha that’s crazy! I’ve seen pics of the FJ cruisers with the rad support totally gone and getting into the frame. Do you have a “winter car” as someone explained it to me as? Or do you do lots of undercoating work?

i keep the cars insured all year round and take the trucks on dry days as long as it hasnt salted in a couple days.
but toyota cars unlike the trucks hold up great in terms of rust resistance.. so i drive the avalon and corolla around all winter... corolla without ABS or traction control is a Ball to drive in the snow..

Here's my basic plan of attack for tomorrow.
(Or whenever the rain rolls out. Supposed to rain for the next 2 days.)
    Plan A:
    • Jack truck up.
    • Tear down to where I was today.
    • Drill out the "jack-bolt" holes.
    • Tap bigger threads.
    • Use new bolts as jack bolts.
    • Remove old drum.
    • Begin repair.
    Plan B:
    • Find "The Maul."
    • Protect studs with lug-nuts/tape?
    • Beat the FUCK out of the old drum
    • Begin repair
    Plan C:
    • Break out the angle grinder.
    • Go to town around the outer edge of the rotor.
    • Open enough space to get a Crow bar in there.
    • Pry old drum off.
    • Begin repair.
Any other ideas from the Pros?

Ive seen one on ebay that was painting white so it was probably that one. Looks good! Hows the quality of the trim? Im not sure I want to replace the oem trim but if it is good quality I might.

    B. A won't do much you'll just end to with the same issue again. C you'll end up screwing up the backing plate.

Things that may help, wire brush the center to remove some rust there. Put the lug nuts on partially so the studs are safe.

Firstly, back the star adjuster off a little so that your shoes retract inside away from being close to the drum. Secondly, give her a few taps with a rubber mallet or baby maul (softly). Last resort is using those bolts to push off.

    On topic-sorta.

As per the weatherman foretold, today I awoke to pissy, drizzley rain, and occasional downpours of the monsoon variety.

@FrenchToasty no need to crank up the wiggle box for me today. Hopefully tomorrow.

    That is all.

    Begin "isolation."

I'm with fester on this one. To drill it out you need to drill past the drum, and you'd end up drilling into the axle. You can run the tap in to chase the threads which might work. I'm betting it doesn't. Seems like its seized on both the axle and backing plate. Or just get new backing plates and go to town on the whole thing. If you do need to replace the backing plates you gotta pull the axle out. Not a hard job either.

"Ah, I see" says the blind man.

So that would be the only way to replace my rusted out "border" or trim? How crucial is it that I have this?

    The pieces in blue.

Correct on the blue pieces. Every one I've seen on any vehicle they always get stuck 2 places. 1 is the axle flange rusting to the drum and the other is just a ridge that develops on the back side where the shoes ride.

The first is the easiest with previously mentioned hammer, the other just takes a lot of patience and usually ends up breaking the material off the shoe before it comes off.

When you reinstall give the flange a thin coat of antiseize after cleaning up all the rust.

I understand the axle flange, and think I understand the "ridge" you mention. I'm sure once I have everything torn apart, and can put MY hands on everything I will understand better.

Clean up, rust reform, paint, and anti-sieze is on the agenda!

Looking at using these on new, and rusty parts.

Good to go? Or do I need a 3rd?

    Painting is not my specialty.

Edit: Also picked up some duct tape width masking tape to cover the "wear area" on the inside of the new drum.

It rained all night, of course, and since I waxed every bit of my truck aside from the roof I got a good view of the effect. Note the layer of water vs the beads.

I'd smack around the edges of the drum by the backing plate. But just remember, the drum turns, the backing plate doesn't. If they get tweaked its gonna be noisy. Might be easier to do new backing plates and basically just keep the axles. Everything else new.
