It's not that it causes failure, it causes the already bad clutches to slip with the new fluid. It washes out all the old friction material in the old fluid thats keeping the bad clutches working.

Hi fellas I’m thinking of picking up a 2002 Tundra AC 4x4, it has 250k but person just got it a couple months ago and isn’t aware of the timing belt being done.
I checked the Carfax app and there’s no record of it ever being done by a shop.
If the person had the truck for several years I would go for it but I’m Hessitant with those miles and seller just picking up and selling truck right away.
    I have almost 200k on my LX470, and 201k on my ES350.
I’m not afraid of them but don’t want to pick up the truck and have to dump in steering rack which is common, timing belt, water pump.
What do you guys think? It’s very clean outside, decent inside.

Is steering rack that common? Mine's on 250k miles. Could be what I hear whining occasionally, but works great and doesn't leak. If you need a truck and that one is less than $3500 in great shape I would consider it. Obviously inspect the frame. The timing belt is a catastrophic failure item. I would pull the cover on one of the cam sprockets and at least inspect it. If it looks good, replace at your convenience. Pretty sure mine went 212k miles before it was replaced by the second owner, me.

I’ve had my 2002 since brand new and the timing belt was done at 110k miles in 2014. She is sitting at 169k miles now. Pretty sure my local garage didn’t register the belt redo at CarFax (dealer scam site). If someone questioned me and said, ‘Well the TB is not on registered on CarFaux’ then I’d laugh right in their face.

Go and look and buy it if it looks good. Otherwise move on and find another.

    Nothing beats eyes/hands on.

I drive my truck about 60 miles a day. It is a 2002 4.7 Limited Access Cab with 273,000 on the clock. New Toyota rebuilt transmission at 250,000 miles. Excellent condition and well worth the $31,500 sticker price when I bought it new in Oct, 2001. Before the Tundra, I had a 1983 Ford E150 Club Wagon with a 300 CID inline 6 and a 4 speed manual transmission. It went 331.000 miles and my goal is to st least beat that with this Tundra. I have had my non-Toyota shop replace all 8 coil units when 2 units failed at about 240,000 miles. I have replaced the timing belt 3 times.

I replaced the front section of the 2 piece drive shaft at 190,000 along with 3 universal joints and the center support. I had vibration in the drive line between 35 and 70 mph. The Toyota tech wanted to replace the rear end at an estimated cost of $6000. My independent shop rebuilt the drive line for under $800.

Interesteing. I've heard of new fluid causing a trans failure, but I've never considered this as the mechanism. Seems reasonable.

actually only about 50k of them are mine, it was bought new by a close family member and I’m the second owner. uncle drove coast to coast chasing hail storms (he’s in the paintless dent repair buisness). He’s claimed multiple times he’d go 10k+ miles between oil changes and only serviced the transmission a couple times. Which I believe because the trans fluid looks like mud lol but I’m too scared to change it. He’s for sure had one timing belt installed but can’t recall if he had a second one. I just drive it now for work and just give it a little tlc and drive the wheels off of it. Has never let him nor me down!

Yessir original engine and trans. Engine has plenty of power, no smoke, no noises, purrs like a kitty. Trans has a little slop between first and second but everything else shifts nice and firm.

    Legendary.

Do you plan to do the timing belt?
I understand the transmission fear. Have you considered just one drain and fill to see if that improves the shift issue?

I'm in the same boat with the trans. Way fewer miles (176k) but has the slop between 1st and 2nd (unless you put it in "2" then no slop between 1st and 2nd, unsure how that works) and sometimes relatively rough shifts nothing too terrible. Fluid is dark-ish doesn't smell too bad. I'm considering just a drain and fill once or maybe twice to see if it does anything good. I don't think the trans has ever been serviced. I know the previous owner hauled a camper some so hoping I'll never have to do a trans. At 441k and maybe only having done 1 timing belt on yours, it might be worth taking off a few bolts for the drivers side timing cover and at least take a look at the belt.

    :thumbsup::thumbsup:
i plan on doing a timing belt/water pump in the fall. As far as the trans goes, it was about a quart low when I checked it about 25k ago so I added a quart of Lucas. It did noticeably improve the slip bang shift but it’s still there. We’re just going to see how long this fluid really lasts

When I first bought it I had to replace the fan pulley bracket/faux water pump and was able to see most of the belt. I was very surprised by the shape it was in, it looked almost like a brand new belt. I checked both sides of the belt and could not find any cracking or fraying. Either way it won’t hurt to get a new one on here soon.

Are you thinking of doing your timing belt since you are at 7-years, although way below the 90k miles? Mine is similar and wondering if we really need to do that. Thoughts?

According to Toyota Maintenance Guide, it's 90K or 108mo(9yr). Personally, unless I had coolant issues(WP, radiator), seal issues, I would simply be planning to change the TB as it approaches the yr or miles parameter.

My first belt change was at 12 years old and 72,000 miles. Now I'm at 8 years and about 24,000 miles since the last and only belt replacement. I did do a H2o pump last time. I've been pondering this off and on for a while, whether to replace the belt and maybe pump again next year. Seems a bit silly with such low miles since the last change. It's a big job and FWIW, the original belt looked fine after 70k plus miles. I guess I will think on it since I still have time according to official Toyota's guidelines.

Purchased new. Other than standard maintenance it has rarely needed anything over the past 21 years, and I've left everything stock. Replaced cracked exhaust manifold and two O2 sensors, right side brake caliper and new valve cover gaskets. Recently replaced the radiator but that was elective because I had read enough stories about radiator fluid getting into the transmission. I think that's about it. It drives as smooth and quiet as new. Remarkable.

    Took pics today.
