Got my Viair compressor in, fit nicely into the pelican box. I can add some additional items in each when I think of them but for the most part, they are setup.

Then I started something. I finally received all the tools I ordered so I thought what the hell, let me take off my heat shields and see how easy that was. I figured I'd start on the driver side since it's meant to be the worst.

    10 mins later, shield out!

I then started on the two impossible bolts to get to. The good news, after about 5 mins I was able to get the socket onto one. The bad news, it wouldn't budge!

My wife had to pick up Moes (because she's been dying for it since Cinco De Mayo but we had to cancel our order since they were WAYYYY overcrowded and we would have had to wait an additional 45-60 mins for our food).

Once she gets back, I am going to check an easier bolt to ensure I can get them off then go back to figuring out these (2). Once I get these off, it should be smooth sailing as all the other bolts seem easy to get it.

I'm trying to achieve this with the wheels on, planted on the ground. So I definitely have some obstacle challenges but it doesn't seem that bad as long as I can break the bolts loose.

Some pics below showing the header and the infamous bolts hiding behind the motor mount....and the new compressor of course!

Have you sprayed the bolts with anything? I'm not even in a salt zone and all exhaust manifold my bolts are rusty. I'd spray them with Kroil or deep creep for a few days.

Mainly a creek, but I know it’s coming from my coil overs making contact with shock body.

    Quick update:

I did not spray the bolts with anything and it's an Idaho truck.

I went back outside at 6:07pm est. confirmed by blink and had the (2) impossible bolts off within 9 mins (took pic of those two with the hardware that I used to remove). It took me another 50 mins to get the rest off. I had (2) strip on me which took about 10-15 mins each.

As of right now, all (8) bolts are removed. I need to disconnect the cat and the o2 sensor.

I'm taking a break to eat dinner and I might go back depending on the sunlight/mosquitoes.

If not, I'll pick up the remainder tomorrow. Some of the studs came out but not all.

Worn leaf silencer pads or bad bushing/sleeves at shackles is my best guess. Its been going on with my truck for about 5 years. PB blast your rear shackles and the sound goes away or reduces temporarily @Pucks18

    You got this.

    I'm using the following:

    • 14mm deep socket (if it'll fit, shallow if it won't)
    • 1/4" Universal Joint
    • 15" extension with wobble head
    • 6" standard extension when extra reach is required
    • 1/4" breaker
      • 1/2" to 1/4" (when I need the 1/2" breaker)
      • 1/2" breaker - Only needed this once
Typically the 1/4" breaker is sufficient but I did use the 1/2" breaker once.

Links to the wobble head extensions and the toolset I just picked up. I had the breaker bars already (and most of a socket set just scattered across multiple tool boxes)

Yes please, with links. I'm seriously impressed how quickly you did that. You didn't even mess with the motor mount.

Is that the driver or passenger side?

Driver side. (which I think is supposed to be the hardest) Didn't remove the motor mount or anything other than the plastic guards in the wheel well, heat shield and unbolt the cat.

I just went back and disconnected the cat and o2 sensor to full remove the header.

    Overall time:

    • plastic wheel well covers & heat shield - 10 mins
    • Header - 60 mins
    • Cat bolts - 5 mins
    • o2 sensor - 10 mins (I tried by hand way too long because I didn't want to get a flat head screwdriver)
    • pull the header out the bottom - 2 mins
    • Total time - 87 mins ( I was timing myself to really understand how bad it was as I was quoted 10hrs). I didn't remove the tires/jack the vehicle or anything.
    • Overall time - 2hrs with posting the pics on the site, taking (2) breaks and eating half my dinner.

Also, saw this repair....I was getting a rattle when i got to the last 200-300 rpm before redline and I'm not sure if it was this or the bottom bolt closest to the cat wasn't but hand tight!

Yeah, my truck makes a weird noise at high RPM as it shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear. I don't know what it is. You're inspiring me to move forward with headers.

The extensions and universal joint definitely make this a realistic project. I know I'm not done yet but I feel really confident as to where I'm at and how long it took to get there.

I have been super nervous about attempting this project but couldn't fathom spending a $1000 just to get them installed knowing the gains won't be huge. Hopefully better since it's supercharged but they're not long tubes!

Still a ways to go but I'll document along the way..

    Oh, no alcohol either ;)

Def not terrible but the tools are important. I can see it being a nightmare!

I kept telling myself it's just nuts and bolts.. so finally, like I always do, I walk out to just see how hard it's going to be so went for the hardest bolts and they came off so easily I just kept going until it was off.

I still have to work so my goal tomorrow is to get the driver side back in and then move on to the passenger. I have to fully remove that cat on the passenger side so I can weld on an o2 bung since I have a bamuffler from an 00-02 that has the o2 sensor on the cat. So I'll order the bung tonight and get that welded and remove the rest of the exhaust so I can prep for that install. Def excited to keep the momentum moving!!
