Fly Rod Holder

Long shot, but i was steelhead fishing Elk Creek in Erie/Girard yesterday, and saw a cement tacoma parked at the Legion Hole parking area. It looked like the owner bolted a home-made, t-shaped contraption to the top of the tailgate that would allow him to strap the reel seat to the device, and just put the rod tip through the back window for safe transport between fishing spots.

I asked a few guys i saw, but couldn't find the owner. I've toyed with the idea of creating something similar, but couldn't come up with anything that would work with the bakflip mx4.

I know this is an old thread but figured I would share here what I just added. Can rig the rods and break in half and ready to go.

Don't have a driver's oh shit handle above the door so had to rig it up to the headliner clip cap.

 

I use a 10' 8wt for steel. Always just roll down back window, go through drivers window (tip first) tip out back cab over bed, place the reel in the top center console cut out. Never had an issue when moving spots this way... This way you can avoid breaking down rod and having to tie another uni-uni (or surgeons if you're a heathen lol).

 

Ya I've always kinda done the same but you can leave the rod rigged, break in half and it takes 2 seconds to setup without tying knots. This will hold 5 and is out of the way.

Absolutely no offense meant. I'm by no means a "refined" fly guy. I don't outfit Sims head to toe, just fake it until I make it. I definitely appreciate your setup, was just trying to give my method as contrast. I personally hate breaking down my rod especially with a 10ish' flouro nymphing leader, so I leave it whole and run it through my back window.
When I break the rod down it goes in the tube to head home, but that's just me.

 

No worries, no offense taken. I have always done it the same way as you with no issues. I actually learned how to "break down" the rods this way from a guide buddy who stores them like this on his drift boat. It nice for longer trips and for being able to keep the window up in the rain or with my kids in the back.

 

I've had a car seat in the back for 4 years now and will for another 4-5 years! When the fly rod is rarely in the backseat, the kids are not. This is my get away/social distancing for the (half) day. Nothing but knots, throwing line, and nature! And, if I get real lucky, an occasional fish.
