Hello Tundra fam! I have a chance to get a small aluminum fishing boat for $950. It's an older Sears 14' Gamefisher, don't know the year. It looks to be in fairly good condition. Comes with a 7.5hp Honda outboard that needs an impeller and a head gasket. Trailer is in very good condition. My question is what should I be looking out for? It's a riveted hull. Will it leak like a sieve? It'll be used in fresh water only, mostly in the Sierras. I know absolutely nothing about boats so I'm hoping one of y'all has some insight as to what to watch out for. I don't want to end up looking forward to the second happiest day in a boat owner's life... :(

Grab your garden hose and fill that sucker full of water. You'll easily be able to find the links then. Hit them from the inside with silicone caulk.

I'll give it a try. Not sure how the owner will react to me filling up his boat! 'Excuse me sir where can I hook up my hose?'

I wouldn't say it that is a great deal. I feel like you could find something similar with a working motor for the he same price. Honda's are easy to fix but maybe $700-$800 would be a better price. If it doesn't leak will definitely get you on the water. Don't forget your PFD and whistle.

I had a 17 foot Bayliner that I traded for a new smokercraft skiff a few years ago and it would be hard to convince me to buy something that's not aluminum....because it's not sitting outside rotting here in Washington. More time fishing, less time cleaning!

Honestly, if he's a straight shooter and isn't in a panic to sell it he shouldn't have a problem with it. I have a 13ft riveted boat I did just that to when I bought it. All it takes is pulling the drain plug and 15 or 20 minutes for it to drain out when you're done. Worst case scenario, just dump a few buckets of water in. You don't really need to full it up to the gunnels, just to above the water line.

I don't know what the market is like in your area but around here, $950 would maybe buy me that motor if it's in running condition. At that price, you're buying the motor and getting the boat and trailer for free. If the motor need a couple hundred bucks in work, you're still getting a fair deal for the whole package imho.

I'm a current boat owner. The best boat out there, belongs to someone else. Don't get me wrong, love the enjoyment from a boat. But they are a pain in the ass, especially the 2 stroke engines.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen! The outboard is a 4-stroke Travis. Also, who made these for Sears? He states that he's selling the boat and throwing the motor in for free.

4 strokes are definitely better. I want to think the Sears motors were Evinrude, possibly Johnson. I could very well be wrong though.

The boat is a Sears Gamefisher. The motor is a Honda.

Don't quote me on it but I think it was Springbok that made the Sears boats.

Thanks for the lead. I'll definitely look into it. I ended up buying the boat, trailer, and motor for $850. Dropped the outboard off today at an authorized Honda sales n service in Redondo Beach. Parts are still available! So far parts are only $170 but they won't know for sure what the total will be until they crack 'er open tomorrow. :fingerscrossed: Found one on CL identical to mine. He was asking $1300!

$850 is a good deal. if the motor is too big or too heavy (4-stroke) for a 14', you can always sell it.
    What's the boat hp rating?

    Edit:
nevermind , I thought it was 75 hp ... lol
7.5 hp would be a little weak for 14' but you can always sell and buy something bigger if not fast enough.
I had a 12' with 9.9 Honda and it was ok for a year then I wanted a bigger motor.

I would go to the place you will have fix your outboard and price the repairs. They maybe a lot more than you imagine. I had a 14 foot fiberglass boat with a 40 HP motor and it flew. 75???? The transom should have the maximum HP the boat can handle. Or see if you can find it on the internet. New motors are VERY expensive. Check the cost of a 40 or 25, which may be more suitable for that boat size and weight. BTW: too much HP will void and insurance you get for the boat. But again, check with you agent.

Going thru some of the stuff I got with the boat and I saw this compartment attached to the side of the tank. Had a knob that wouldn't turn so l soaked it in PBB. Next day it begrudgingly turned. Lo and behold! Genuine Honda Marine tool kit! Also a spare pull cord and some Honda oil! IMG_3503.jpgIMG_3504.jpg IMG_3505.jpg

I bought a 1978 Gamefisher used about 25 years ago. It has been a great little fishing boat. Stays nice and dry after all these years.

Nice looking boat, love the lines in it. Pricing varies w/location, so for cali, it might be a great deal, but for missouri, maybe not.

Nice score! That tool kit is awesome.

There's something just "right" about a 1st Gen Tundra doing sportsman things like towing a boat. It's almost like they were meant to be fishing and hunting trucks. :)
