These are what was chosen because of the road closure and now forest fire going on down around Mt. Blanca/Medano Pass. All of these are down around Buena Vista. We wont drive all of them. We should be able to hit a couple of them.
Let @COMiamiFan and myself know if y'all are down. Same days, same rally location. There is dispersed camping.
    1. Cottonwood Lake - Buena Vista
    2. Fourmile Area: Shield/Mcgee Loop (Buena Vista) There are several trails in this 4 mile area location.
    3. Fourmile Area: Seven Mile Creek
    4. Fourmile Area: Lenhardy Cutoff
    5. Fourmile Area: Mushroom Gulch
    6. Fourmile Area: Little Cottonwood Creek
    7. Fourmile Area: Big Sandy

I'm not familiar with these. Are we planning to pick a few or camp anywhere specifically at this point?

I imagine we'll pick a couple then look for a place to wagon wheel.
I should have finer details by Sunday.

It would be cool to do something like that again. Hopefully in a couple or 3 months when everything settles down.

I posted a mini trip report on post #2

It was tight for a Tundra and I went in low water season. So I can see in early summer when water runoff is higher that it could be bad for low clearance vehicles.

Anyone run this recently from the East? Heading to the Sand Dunes for a couple days, and want to take the pass in. Going to be loaded up with camping gear, water, coolers, etc, so will be a bit on the heavy side. Any issues running this fully loaded? Have the wife and kids, and her tolerance for getting stuck is low...lol.

Very few were were hitting it Memorial Day weekend while I was there, other than folks with a lot of lift and tall ass tires. The park rangers were warning folks about the high water crossing. I'll be hitting the pass this 4th of July weekend. The creek will be a lot lower by then. Good luck! The creek is still flowing pretty good by the dunes which is a lot of fun for the kids. You can call the park and get the latest advisory the day you want to head down the pass. This time of year there will be lots of folks hitting the pass and the dunes. Lots!

Just got back from our long weekend at the dunes. This run was a blast, truck crushed it with zero issues. Did drag my Wilco in the mud on one drop, and have a lot of new pinstripes from the willows... and pretty much ran the whole thing with my mirrors tucked in. Water wasn't over the center of the wheels at any of the crossings. Did have one Snafu due to an unprepared guy getting his Titan stuck in the sand pit heading uphill. We were cruising the final stretch down to camp at 9 pm, hadn't even bothered to air down because the truck was doing so well, when we come upon a Titan with street tires buried up to the body in the sand pit, with his front bumper ripped off and laying there. Guy was flooring it trying to rock himself free. I had to stop in the middle of the sand pit... He was blocking the trail, so with 2 tired kids just wanting to roast marshmallows at camp, I had to get him out to get off the trail. Dug him out and started inching him out of the pit 3' at a time with the Maxxtrax. Fortunately the rangers showed up and we were able to snatch him out, but in the process a snatch strap hook came loose from his truck and broke the windsheild of the rangers truck... So, 2 hours later we covered the final mile to camp... Aired down while we were waiting, and cruised out of the sand pit from a dead stop with zero issues. Highly recommend this run, it was a really fun, mellow cruise with the kids.

Sounds like you had a great time other than the Titan delay. Ha! Was Medano Creek still flowing above the sand by the dunes? It can disappear fairly quick.

Just barely, it was ankle deep by Pinon Flats. Just deep enough for the kids to cool off and have some fun.
