I just recently bought the NorthStar 27f and the GP audio terminals. Love the setup. Don’t forget to do the Alt-S fuse upgrade to allow for the correct charging profile for the AGM.

Looks good, if you don’t mind me asking what fuse did you use for the upgrade. Thanks.

    Definitely like the clean look.

Looks like that style uses screws to clamp down on the cable ends.

did you strip your factory connections?

I've had a set of GP terminals sitting on the workbench for a while now. I had the same concerns about something arcing onto the exposed terminal.
I designed a quick something on fusion360 and printed it on some grey PLA i had in the printer.

I'm fairly happy with how it turned out. It definately needs some revisions. It needs to be thicker on the outer walls (it split when putting it on). and the exposed holes on the bottom need better alignment.

Once i get it dialed in, i'm going to try to use some red PTEG (never used it, but its supposed to be stronger)

I adjusted the wall thickness quite a bit and made it a little bit of a less tight fit. Only downside is that I'll need to figure out how to secure it.

very cool. what if you made it solid with no holes then used a rubber trim on inside and you just press the plastic over the terminal?

Here’s the one I bought... expensive for a fuse.. but it’s peace of mind. AGM batteries are required to be changed at 14.6v to achieve a “float” charge. Charging with 13.5-13.8v COULD damage the battery long term and never allow for 100% battery capacity.. If you check the NorthStar site you will see it’s recommended to be changed at 14.6v. Even the Odyssey website states the same. If you don’t want to do the fuse you can always pickup a new battery charger that can charge AGM batteries and go this route. You would need to plug it up at least once every 3 weeks. If you go the charger route I would recommend a ctek charger.

    Fuse: (recommended option)

    2nd option

I did think about coating the inside with some plastidip.
Those holes need to be there (or a at least a divot) for the bolts to stick out the bottom

ah, I didnt realize that was the bottom. couldnt you make a top plate as well and have it sit on top side under the bolts? anything you screw down will still make contact via the bolts. Just not sure if there would be any advantages to covering up the plate but not the bolts.

I cut my Gp audio terminals down to 4 posts, it made for a better overall fit and finish IMO. And the fuse replacement booster is the easiest remedy for the AGM .

That's an interesting thought....if it doesn't infringe with electronics, it could be a good option.

Adding a Northstar, or the equivalent, has been on my to-do list for awhile. I hope my current battery makes it until the next group buy.

I just read most of the posts, on this site and the Tacoma site, about removing the stock fuse and replacing it with a diode, opinions are very equivocal. Some people swear by it, and some people did the mod and removed it. Also, some of the same people who initially swore by it have removed it.

There are also plenty of people who have the Northstar and have done nothing at all and who have gotten years of service from their battery.

So, if you do nothing and run the Northstar at slightly less than the optimum level of charge are you defeating the purpose of having an AGM battery? Are you just as well off running a high quality lead-acid battery that is charged optimally?

Or are there other advantages to a Northstar battery, even if it isn't optimally charged?

    Sorry for all the questions.

Anyone know if the tacoma HKB blade is the same as the tundra one? I used the link and accidentally bought the one for a 2010 tacoma :frusty:

    edit:
I just looked, the tacoma one is a 7.5 amp, and the tundra is a 5 amp. I'll email them.

I think you have to look at it by the load you are putting on the battery. I have a 12k winch that requires at least 900 cold cranking amps. 50amp light bar, 25 amp fog lights, 15amp ditch lights. Now I most likely will never utilize the winch with all of the lights on. The 14.6v is what NorthStar recommends to charge the battery. By the time I invested $300+ for the battery and GP audio terminals. Might as well spend $50 and charge the battery correctly to get 10 years out of it. Also the 14.6v charges the battery a lot quicker which is nice when you have a demanding load. I’m sure the battery will be just fine with the stock alternator output voltage.

@sdhq_offroad terminals are in. These are sweet. I like their size. And it still has enough extra connections for accessories I will ever need.

WOW those SDHQ terminals are nice! Been contemplating replacing my “mill spec” no name versions for awhile. Found them loose on a couple of occasions. Guess it’s time to do it.

Did you have any problems taking your factory cables and mounting them on the new sdqh terminals? No new new ends?
