Difference between Internal vs Remote Reservoir on Shocks

    I have been looking at replacing my front shocks since I will be putting an aftermarket front bumper. I cannot tell what the difference is between an internal reservoir vs remote reservoir when comparing aftermarket shocks. I have looked at many different companies but the two below are just for reference.

    Eibach Pro Truck Stage 2 suspension, HD RAS, 285/75-18 Nokian Outpost AT, LoPro bed cover, TRD rear sway bar, DD 10 inch exhaust, and various other goodies
    Internal has the fluid inside the shock....remote has the fluid external to the shock, stored in another tube or receptacle and there is a tube that feeds fluid to the shock. The benefit of remote- holds more fluid and the fluid remains cooler, less froth...so better shock performance.

    They look great but you may not need remote shocks...they are helpful for heavy off-road use. If mainly street driven, the extra cost may not be worth it for you.

    Aren't externals for folks Needing extra range of shock motion due to body and suspension lifts in offroadie situations?

    The remote reservoir has oil and nitrogen in it. The remote reservoir allows for less pressure inside the shock, and smoother compression.

    Make sure you get a heavy enough spring rate to accommodate the bumper that’s more important than the resi. If your working it hard Offroad then get remote resi’s. If not stick to internal. Unless you find a good deal on a set with remotes.

    Correct spring rates and valving yes. Its very common to over spring a coilover, which can result in a harsh ride.
