Thinking of adding a cheap sun shade over our deck. I don't want to drill into the house and I'm looking for the most cheap, effective, and correct way to do it. My neighbors added two 4x4 posts in the inside corners of their deck and just attached a square sunshade to each post and then put eye hooks in their siding.

I don't exactly want to copy their idea :D Instead of a square sun shade, I want to do multi-leveled triangle sun shades.

My deck is just your standard pine deck, about 5 feet off the ground and is 14x14. I don't anticipate getting full coverage with this idea but I just want some shade as it is better than none.

I just don't know the best/easiest way to attach new 4x4 posts for the shades. Ideally I would think I need them in the ground. Alternatively, I suppose I can just put them in the corers of the deck with some lag bolts. Would this be okay? I'll update this post shortly with pictures.

Have a picture of the deck setup? Would help picture what you’re trying to accomplish with your current setup.

Excuse the mess. Here are a few pics for reference. Notice the neighbors set up as mentioned above

Based on what I can see the sun angle/travel path is, I think you have the triangles in the right spot, could use a single larger one, but 2 medium sized look more eye pleasing, maybe different colors? Only think I can suggest because I've seen in on a friend's, is to attach the left triangle (as looking towards house) to the 1x4 above the doorway, then attach the 2nd one beneath and mid-way between the larger upstairs window. The idea being to attach them at a higher elevation than the front sides, for added shade and water drainage, wind buffering.
