It's because they probably have a service dept. All auto garages are staying open here for the same reason. Vehicle maintenance is essential

I get it. On the flip side those still working in public facing roles are being put at risk if the business is not actually essential. Essential business should stay open and those working should be getting some extra $for that risk. Some companies here are going that...Amazon for instance.

I can certainly understand the loss of income. I've been laid off more times that I would like to admit so fully understand the impact to an individual or family.

Given the current conditions, perhaps a better option would be to just shut everything down except essential business (gas, medical, grocery) for 2 weeks with employees paid if at all possible. I do believe the stay at home declarations work.

In VA the governor has made a stay at home declaration, limited businesses to 10 customers or less if essential or open. However, they also are allowing gun shops to stay open, as essential....and other retail if they sell any type of food (dried for instance or can drinks).

During this time of stay at home declaration I have seen first hand who is out and about and what they are buying (because I have had to be out and working). I can assure you that the good majority are NOT buying essentials. They want to get out of the house, are bring their spouses, wives, kids and even dogs out. They stand in lines (in close quarters) for the retail establishments that are still open and limited to 10 customers inside. And stand in lines for hours in some cases....have seen this with my own eyes.

I have seen two strangers talk within inches of each other, showing pictures on their cellphones (multiple times).

Ive seen way too many couples bringing infants out to purchase ammo, gun or things like fishing equipment (too many times to count).

I have seen people at grocery stores walking up to a couple with dogs....and 7-10 different people petting both dogs in a matter of minutes. Then a man walked up and after greeting the dog and petting it and talking with the couple, he opened his drink cup and scooped out ice with his bare hands. He fed that to the dog, then continued to drink his drink.

I am all for making $ and hope everyone can make ends meet. It sucks that people and business are being hurt financially. But- I would gladly lose some pay to keep my family and myself healthy.....I just don't have that choice without quitting my job, so I will work until told not to. People are not being safe or taking the situation as seriously as they should....my real experience and it has been going on like this for weeks here.

I'm a Truck driver and we have essential customers like PG&E Etc. so I'm still working. I'm down to only 4 days a week. My company let 251 people go on March 20. At my Branch 4 were let go and today the Branch Supervisor was let go and my Boss said that Corporate was not finished yet so I'm just taking this whole thing 1 day at a time.

I get what your saying and I to have seen everything your describing. Just go to the local Home Depot and its packed! I to am still working, just being careful and then go through a decon procedure immediately once I get home. But on the flip side we are not going to be able to be stowed away in our homes for the next year, there is no cure for this until a vaccine comes out 12-18months from now. All we are doing is giving governments time to prepare, stock up and not overrun the hospitals with the initial wave. At some point we will have to return to normalcy while still being as careful as we can, this is what's not being told. Takes one person to start this all over again, so at what point is it deemed safe to return to normal life...

    Everyone be safe out there!

Surprised the trucking industry is laying off, I figured you guys would be rolling to keep stores and hospitals stocked. But I guess with no one spending money on anything besides household goods like groceries the other goods are not being moved as much.

Yes, the whole situation sucks. I never thought I would see such a thing. Just shows how things can get sideways quickly!

Wishing everyone safety and speedy recovery health-wise and financially

Working the park today, several groups meeting up, picnics, hugs exchanged, kids playing tag. I’m done being big brother, I’m just rolling through making sure nothing is being vandalized and going back to my office. If they want to get sick so be it, I’m not putting myself at risk trying to explain why they shouldn’t be doing these things .

I'm in sales for a solar installation company so we fall in the construction and energy sectors, both of which are considered essential here in MA.

Luckily, I just got my fiber optic internet hooked up here at the house in January just before everything went sideways, so I can work from home most of the time. When I do site visits now I don't go in the customer's house, just measure the roof and get a site efficiency reading and stay away from the customer if they come outside. I ask them to take a few pictures of their breaker panel and email them to me.

Only go out when necessary, groceries, post office once a week or so. We live on a quiet street so I take walks up the road with my wife and kids on nice days and never see anyone on our walks.

Don't have any train track near the ship do you? Some crazy bastard derailed a train and tried to run it into the ship Mercy in Long Beach harbor yesterday. https://www.yahoo.com/gma/engineer-...s-angeles-233500380--abc-news-topstories.html

I work in the Water/Wastewater Industry. We keep the toilets flushing and the water flowing for a small town in Nor Cal.

It is still F ing scary working still especially if it really hits the fan. We only have 29 cases here but the public is always around me.

Maybe Im missing something here, but what is that supposed to mean exactly? Did I not get a joke or something? No one is being forced to work. I, for one, appreciate being an essential employee, and feel for those who aren t so fortunate. Hell if a person doesn t want to work im sure another would gladly fill the spot.

There are jobs that are absolutely essential for society to keep going. Then there are jobs that employers deem essential for their profits, sacrificing their employees health for it. All those employees that deal with hundred of different people a day that could possibly have Covid-19 and not know, unknowingly getting infected and bringing it home to their families to spread it. Symptoms can take 4 to 14 days for them to show up.

Im a hydrographer. Mapping the bottom of the ocean, rivers etc. Keeping our ports open for all the toilet paper. Im also the one that maps it after hurricanes when the seas are still high. The sooner they get things going the sooner we get supplies.

There s nothing like personal responsibility, and self sufficiency. My take is they go hand in hand. Of course it s a personal choice to work or not if you have a job that puts you at risk. No one is forcing you. The supervisor, or company brass do not control you. If you have a dangerous job, and don t want to work then don t, but to blame it on companies is silly. Do you expect them to give paid time off, or some other hand out? No thanks. I will work, (because fortunately I can), pay my bills, and leave the hand outs for those who really need them.

Western Mass? We just got fiber in January which is huge for my wife and kids. Otherwise we had to hotspot our phones which worked but wasn't ideal.

I work from home so essentially I need to stay working. The wife is also working at home. We are fortunate for now, and I say that because who knows at this point how much further this goes and how worse things could get. My Heart goes out to those not so fortunate and have to put their lives in jeopardy for everyone else. No one is forced to work, but they do............for us, God Bless them. I consider each day a Gift that we are ok, It's others I have to worry about...........1 family member so far has it, and my Daughter in health care is getting tested today, Fingers Crossed to the point of pain. I'm a Rebel without a cause, stubborn in my own way, will do what I want and don't need advice..........................but 3 weeks ago I did what was suggested and stay home. If you have to work or chose to just use the best precautions you can, that's all you can do. Face covering, gloves, washing your hands, washing your cloths after being out, ect. are all simple things that could mean life or death. You may have a good immune system, but what about everyone else around you. The precautions you take are for other people as well. You can have no symptoms and be a carrier. I told my wife when she goes to the store from the beginning to always wear your mask and gloves and discard properly, and wash her clothes and take a shower. NOW the CDC agrees about wearing the mask at all times. I'm am also looking to hire someone for lawn work just to help someone out. Always remember what we as Americans are all about, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall."

I'm still not seeing how wearing gloves helps unless it reminds you not to touch your face.
