What year did Toyota start putting apple car play in the vehicles? And which vehicles?

Don't know about their other models but 2020 was the first year for the Tundra.

Well they may be an option for others.

My mom has a 2018 Camry, 4cyl, but it looks like a xse, body kit, spoiler and the same wheels. Anyways, she called me yesterday, said her radio screen went black, showing nothing, but the music was still playing and it was still connected to her phone/Bluetooth. Plus, her car don't even have xm radio. I told her to take to the local dealership, still under the bumper to bumper warranty. She took it in today and they updated her existing radio to Apple car play.

So, it may be possible to have the tundra updated to it.

I don't have an apple, but I specifically got a 2019 over a 2020 to AVOID android auto, so I hope they don't do that to mine. Most useless, invasive distracting $#!t I ever had in a vehicle. Part of why I was ok getting into another new vehicle. Hated it so much in the Renegade.

2019 on some models but certain 2018 models can be retrofitted. Like the 18 camry.
    2020 for Tundra

I totally agree, I couldn't give 2 shits for it myself. I don't want/need that crap. I was just letting some know that it may be possible to get their tundra done, for those that can't live without that shit

no and no. The tundra didn’t get an “in between” step where it came with an Entune 3.0 unit without carplay. 2019 and down units used the circa 2012 entune 2.0 hardware which can’t be upgraded with carplay. I believe only the Sienna and Camry were in that situation where they got 3.0 units before carplay was turned on.

I have the capability in my truck. Have never used it. So where does the distraction come in?

Doesn't carplay just mirror your phone by default?
I would find that plenty distracting.

I don't know about Car Play because I have an Android but you need to plug your phone in and turn AA on to use it.

Same basic feature set and concept though.
The problem for me is that when I am driving I do not want to use my phone as it is distracting I think.
Many others live on the phone and then there are people on every point in the continuum between me and the phone users too.
The notion that it is not distracting is simply not conceivable to me.

Fully agreed. My phone stays in my pocket when I drive. But just because you have a feature doesn't mean you have to use it.

I had the app uninstalled from my phone, but if I plugged my phone directly into a USB port to charge it, the phone recognized it's plugged into a vehicle and would ding and tell me to install it. I would tell it no, and between 2 and 5 minutes later it would Ding and pop it up again. It would block the navigation on the head unit to tell me to installed carplay. I had to buy a cigarette adapter and plug it into the outlet that way to charge my phone. I hated it.

    For sure!
But the big thing seems to be now that once you get into the car it just connects automatically to do its thing so that you dont need to mess with it and will not ever have to be without it.
I think it is also another generational thing too probably as much as anything.

And you Carplay people, stay off of my lawn!

Hmm, that's annoying. I haven't tried plugging my phone into my truck yet so I hope it doesn't do that.

It may not. That might have been something special for Mopar. It doesn't matter to me, because it instilled an absolute hatred for the app and I will never use it.

I sometimes turn on bluetooth on my phone if I know I need to talk to my wife while I'm driving but mostly I keep it off to save battery. Had to unpair my wife's phone from my truck because I got sick of listening to her conversations with her mother every time I pulled in or out of my driveway.

Oh I only use the "Tooth" in the car but usually a thing in my ear as they are just better usually but I try to not look at the phone at all and at the expense of always being available for sure!

I like the CarPlay and it was a big factor in buying a 2020 Tundra (finally can I say). I used to always use my phone NAV now I can sect Apple Maps or googlemaps and have great always up to date NAV service on the 8” touchscreen. I do use pandora often which is also nice as a touch screen option. I didn’t think I’d like texting on screen but can respond to text by voice and it works great. Siri is at my beckon if I need help on the road. I like the Apple phone app and address book (no update issues) and can select addresss for NAV right from my familiar Apple directory. I wish more apps were available for the CarPlay screen but it’s pretty good as is.

BTW, I do pull over to use any of these features that would put others or myself at risk. To me having info more up front on a larger 8” touchscreen is a big benefit. I always keep my phone plugged in for charging in the truck so plugging in for CarPlay is not an issue.

I also drive mostly country roads and highways but you can’t take your eyes off the road there either. A deer or farm animal can do some serious damage and injuries to animals and people.

The JBL head unit does great for country and classic rock sound, and the Apple CarPlay works great for my use. Your needs may be completely different, but I’m pretty happy with this level of technology. I just hope Toyota continues to support CarPlay not like Entune dropping features like pandora, weather, etc. on our 2014 Avalon. That’s a risk with Toyota.
