Good point here. This will make a significant difference in fuel consumption.

I tow a TT that is 8,000 lbs or so. I average around 9.2 mpg when running in S4 which is what I usually use. If I drove in Automatic (which I would only use on very flat terrain), it would increase 1-1.5mpg.

Yep. 8-10. Worse if you have a lift and bigger tires.

Pulling my 5th wheel I get as low as 5.5 going through the rockies and as much as 9.5 through Kansas with a tailwind. I travel 65-75mph.

It’s not all that surprising when you are towing up the mountains. That’ll suck fuel in a hurry

About 11 when towing our boat, probably around 3500 lbs.

6,000 loaded w/o holding tanks filled (1,100 pin weight). It's the aerodynamics not weight that drags my mileage down. That plus I'd rather buy fuel than drive slower.

I towed boat from LaFayette to Dallas all interstate at 70 to 75 mph with Tacoma. Filled up 3 times. 6 hour trip. I bought a Tundra mainly because some lakes I go to would probably require a gas station stop with Tacoma. 21 gallon tank does not last long at 10 mpg. MPGs towing are same with both trucks.

12.1 towing a bassboat from Dallas to Houston and back. Had cruise control set at 75 for most of the trip. Was surprised that I lost about a mpg when I left the shallow water anchors (Talons) in the upright position versus tiled down on the deck of the boat...wind resistance is the killer.

Wow. Thank you all for your input. It has scared me on the MPG but also helped me make my decision to go with the Tundra. I think in the long run (if reputation holds up) it will last me longer and hold the value better.

This is the key I have found!

I drove a brand new Sequoia 1500 miles before XMas pulling a dinky U-Haul from the Midwest to Montana and was astonished by the depth of crappy mileage that it could deliver.
It turned out that if I went 75-85 just to keep up with the other traffic that I was averaging around 8 mpg but if I slowed it down to 65 I could get close to 15 mpg pretty often!
Trouble was the constant getting honked at and almost blown off the road in Wyoming and Montana by everyone else!

That trip was an education for sure but I still wonder exactly what I learned too?

On the way home in a rented Grand Caravan loaded to the hilt I was seeing 23 or so the whole way home on XMas eve.

Those Stow and Go seats are pretty amazing for sure!

i just towed a travel trailer that is 23' fully loaded with water, supplies, dogs, and about 1/2 bed of firewood, tools, etc. I towed from Flagstaff to Phoenix (basically all down hill) and got 9.5mpg. On the way back to Flagstaff (all uphill) I got 8 mpg with no water and not as much food but pretty much everything I took. Not too good but not horrible. I also stayed right at about 60-65mph.

Anyone ever tow a boat without putting it in tow mode? What would happen?

It doesn't seem to matter how much weight I pull, 8.5-10 is where it likes to run when you hook something to the hitch. I pulled 8-9k lbs in a 20' cargo trailer 700 miles including driving through the smoky mountains, averaged 9 for the trip running 70mph. Pulled a single axle open trailer totaling probably 2k lbs the same path and got 10...

A larger fuel tank becomes your best friend especially when towing with a Tundra, why I installed the TF 47. Having to start looking for a gas station every 150 or so miles sucks.

    Pulling 20' Yamaha jetboat 60-70 mph= 10-11 mpg
    Pulling motorcycle trailer 60-70 mph= 11-12 mpg
    Pulling 16' Vnose enclosed trailer 60-70 mph= 10-12 mpg

I guess I should have just put 10-12 mpg pulling just about anything. lol

Transferflow 47 gallon aftermarket gas tank. A common upgrade for people that tow or go overlanding a lot.

You have to press the accelerator down farther and it shifts more often - not holding gears as long. I don’t recommend it.

If you want good gas mileage when towing then get a 3/4 ton with a diesel. And new kidneys.

What is a tf47 ?i ok thanks I didn't and never heard of that, but I can't say that anymore. I get about 10 mpg towing my boat and I see that is normal. I had a 1994 Chevy p/u with a 5/0 engine and got about the same maybe even a little better, it was a stick shift but the clutch master cylinder kept failing so I had to junk it. It was a very nice truck but my tundra is better for sure. Very dependable.
