i started racing on the road and track then went to xc for a bit. it was always clips. running flats on the dh bike was an adjustment. a big one. it's been 5 seasons and i still consider buying clips for the dh bike.

yea Fk that! I like the idea of being able to ditch the bike rather than tomahawking down the mountain with my bike attached to me haha

you won't tomahawk with the bike. it's like a ski binding. they let loose. eventually.

Going back to flats was the best thing I ever did. Every time I'm behind someone that goes down only because they were clipped in, I say, "That's why I quit clipping in".

I had a knee injury and surgery. The only way to ride after recovery was to go to flats so I could change my foot position when the knee was aggravated. The first couple of rides were sketch. However, I quickly learned how to keep my feet on the pedals while airborne, in a trial by fire sort of way. What happened was my riding skills, especially descending, progressed more rapidly in 6 months than the previous 10 years of riding. I was astonished. I was never riding in a good position and developed a lot fo bad habits. Going to flats changed my world. YMMV.

totally this. it's part of the reason i haven't bought flats for the dh bike. handling skills i've picked up are so worth it.

I like those racks. They ain't cheap, but they don't rust out like my Yakima and Northshore Rack are doing. I think I'll go the same route in the future.

That was my thought process. I have been using the Yakima frontloader I got on marketplace for over a year and it was nice but it was a wobbly on the road and felt like it wouldn't last. It will be a great backup, ofor a second rider I will use it. This one is SOLID.. the funny thing is the 1up is right at the same price as the yakimas or Thule roof racks.. This was year end bonus to myself.. Plan on taking some road trips this summer and wanted to feel secure with my bike back there.

anyone by chance running a tailgate pad and a decked system? Wondering if they interfere with the bike properly positioned in the bed..?

My Dakine pad only comes down about 8” on the inside of the tailgate. I doubt that’s low enough the hit the top of the deck?

I guess my concern is by making the bed shallower, will the position of the bike still be secure? I assume the angle will change a little bit but wasn't sure if it made for an awkward position / fit for the bike
