Couldn’t really find any info on the forum about this. And I don’t really trust what I see on the Internet sometimes. So looking for some advice.

I got myself a GoPro for Christmas. Part of the reason was to do some cool moving shots off-routing in the Tundra.

Have any of you had any good experience with a suction cup mount for the outside of the truck? Or, Are there any other type of mounts that should be considered?

    TIA

I can’t imagine suction cups would stay on the truck very well on the outside of the truck...

The genuine GoPro suction mount has very strong suction. I could almost pull a dent with it. I've stuck it to my bed and went full speed through dirt roads, even catching some air, and it was still hard to peel off. That was with an older GoPro which was bigger and heavier than the ones out today. Aftermarket ones are surely cheaper but do you want to risk your $400 camera to save a few dollars?

A good tip is to keep it sealed in a ziplock when not in use, or keep the suction surface covered in saran wrap. I used to do that on mine and the last time I used it I left it out in the open for a few years. Now the suction pad has a fine film of dust on it that I could probably clean off, but would be better if kept clean from the start.

I just find a flat surface and stick it on. I've done it on the bed, the door and the windows. Windows work well but fenders or doors are nice to watch your tires bouncing. The key is a flat surface clean of dust.

Bruce @papasmurf just posted not long ago cam footage inside his wheel well up front, I wanna say it was zip tied cuz with how fast he was goin and all the turns no way cam would stay otherwise.

I think the key here is genuine. We have an aftermarket one that came in a Costco kit, bought for other accessories and it barely holds on the inside of the windshield.

Inner wheel well shots can be done using the sticky mounts. Clean a spot on the frame with simple green, let it dry and apply a gopro sticky mount. Leave it on 24 hours before using.

Thank you all for your input. Tethering is the way to go for sure if doing a suction cup on the outside.

I like the bed rail mount too but kinda pricey.

The GoPro brand suction cup base is great. I've used mine on the freeway and on trails. I stick it right on the windshield above the driver, its got an incredible hold.

I would only attach it to the glass.
Any real flex in a body panel could release the cup.

meh...my RAM suction cup mount kept falling off. Eventually I drilled the dashboard and added something more permanent.

I own this product and use it all the time. I like that if fits the bed rail system but wish it has a swivel mount as well. It pricey but like other said, i've always found the OEM GoPro gear to be very high quality and it lasts for a long time. i've got a bunch of aftermarket that i've had to throw away or worse, almost had equipment failure.

    Some stuff
here are the mounts that i would consider...

not sure what you want to use it for but tackform has some nifty mounts for attaching to headrests. also, a mini gimbal that will work with hero 7 & 8.

    @Navi

The issue is availability. To get one shipped from USA places, it works out to $170 Canadian. No thanks

If I could find it for $50-60 locally, I'd have no problem with that.

That makes sense, i missed that part. No way i would pay 170 CAD either. But, i like working with the GoPro products on the trail so i think getting some mounts makes sense if you're really going to use them
