Has anyone painted their stock running boards?

I am thinking about removing my running boards and taking off the plastic step pieces to paint the running boards black, then reinstall the plastic and remount. Has anyone done this? I am looking for pointers and advice. I don't mind the look of the running boards, but not crazy with the shiny finish.

i used Herculiner, took only one bottle to paint both sides. Took them off and clean them up then i painted them all black. looks good i like them

 

If yours are chrome you will need to sand or prep well for the paint to stick. I would look into getting them powder coated. I had mine PC matt black with a light texture. Mine were not chrome but thinking they can be PC.

Thank you. Were they the stock running boards? If so, do you have a picture by chance? Just trying to get an idea of what it would look like. I suppose I could just print a picture and add sharpie, lol

 

They are aftermarket NFabs that I picked up 2nd hand.

 

Do the BLK plastic pieces come off the OEM running boards and reattach?

 

They should come out. Thinking their are some barbed keeper tabs that may get damaged or broken. How reusable afterward is the question.

 

That's what I'm wondering. I guess the other option is to mask off and spray under edge and around them with spray bed liner.

 

If i remember correctly, the one guy on youtube that makes tundra videos, robmotive i think is his name, had them line-x'ed and it was the brushed stainless oem boards. I'm pretty sure they didn't take the plastic pieces off and actually sprayed the line-x over the entire running board including the plastic. Let me try to find the video.

 

I used Duplicolor truck bed coating on mine. Turned out really good.

 

I painted the Chrome OEMs with Rust-Oleum bedliner paint and the finish is great.

 

Did you take off the plastic parts, spray over them or tape/mask the areas off?

 

Painted right over top. Didn’t feel confident removing the plastic.

 

The plastic comes off but it is a pain - many finicky cheap fasteners. I used spray on bedliner, but it comes off in some spots after a year or two here in the snow belt. I’ll probably do it again this weekend since there isn’t anything else to do anymore.
